I have to admit I was irrationally in fear for quite sometime after I kept reading the Morganza "might" be opened for even days after it was abundantly clear it would need to be opened. Now that its opened all that fear vanished. The levees are massive and they've withstood flood levels at least close to this before - and no one was running around scared then. In 2008 the Red River Landing had its 3rd highest crest ever, they opened the Bonnet Carre, and no one seemed to be afraid then.

If the Morganza was not opened would the levees not has an equal chance of failing on the west side of the MR? What areas of the basin would flood if the river came in from that direction?
Would the flow down the AR and the flow from a MR west levee failure flood the entire area?

Are there any poor people in that area that the govment is secretly trying to protect?

I don't think so. You know that levee you cross at Maringouin (sp?) headed toward Lafayette? That is the east side of the Morganza Spillway. The water would pile up there. I guess is would then flow down to Morgan City on the east side and then back around into the Atchafalaya.
