This is a very helpful site about learning how our flood control system works
Interesting. I want to read it more in depth later.

and I've never heard of the "fuse plug levee" so we have three protection systems in place. Yeah I'm not worried.

it's in eastern avoyelles parish. if you have ever drove to marksville from br, you have passed in just outside of simmesport. i'm worried a little cuz i live only 1 mile away from the guide levee south of the fuse plug levee. the guide levees are 30 feet high but the fuse plug levee is only 10 feet high. since this floodway has never been used, im concerned about how the guide levee will hold up. and a lot of people live in this area. only twice has water reached the fuse plug levee. in 1997 the water reached the bottom of it. but in 73 the water reached the top of the levee. and the water at red river landing is expected to be 2 feet higher than 73.

I think BR's levees are high enough, but who knows. Anyone know the highest the Mississippi ever peaked in BR?

i wouldn't worry if you live in baton rouge. the levees in and around br have held up very well in the past. and morganza will be opened if there were a threat to the levee.

The Ms river is supposed to crest at 60 ft May 20th. Remember that does not include any more rain that we may receive between now and then. 3 years ago it hit 57ft and the levees were cracking north of Greenville, MS.

When it 55 ft, they quit letting people drive on the leveee. The levee is only made to withstand MAX 70 ft. It will most likely reach higher than 60 ft between now and May 20th.

Problem now in the Delta is they are shutting the gates on all of the other rivers including the Yazoo and Sunflower. Right now if the levee DOES NOT BREAK they say that Panther Swamp in Yazoo City will be 15ft under water, and that 360,000 acres of land will flood in the Ms. Delta due to shutting the Gates.

Yeah, essentially what unfolded in 1927 is somewhat similar to what is happening currently. Ample snowfall was melting away in the very upper midwest as recently as a few weeks ago (some places had record snows this winter). Lots of rain has fallen and now many of the tributaries are swollen to capacity and then some, like the White, Ohio, Arkansas, and several others. Now there is 4-8 inches plus forecast for much of this area starting this weekend into next week. I read Rising Tide a few years ago thinking we might see something like 1927 in our lifetimes but I had no idea it would potentially be so soon. I have a feeling that people in the Mississippi Delta in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Missouri bootheel are going to be remembering this one for a while.

How hard would it be for terrorists to blow a few holes in the levee? If you think what happens along the Miss doesn't affect you you're nuts.

In BR the river is suppose to hit 44.5 feet, which would not be as high as the 1927 river crest.
