I work on tugboats. I haven't been on the Mississippi river lately but i have been on the Atchafalaya river and that bitch is running strong. I can just imagine what the mississippi is doing. I do hear it is high though.

You mean...when it didn't flood much of Baton Rouge?

I don't think they're planning on blowing up the BR levee.
I know, but I think a couple levees broke further up the river, if I'm not mistaken. I could be wrong.
I'm talking about relatively small holes in the levee.

I remember the river got pretty damn high back 3 years ago. Is it supposed to be worse than that? I remember the water table had risen to where all around the vet school was un-drivable

Oh, I don't think BR will flood much at all. Maybe a little down in the river bend area, which is a floodplain anyways.
BR doesn't historically flood much.

What and where are you pushing? Have you had to start getting assist boats through berwick vts?

I'd be more concerned about the Old River Control structure.
I do agree with this. That place scares me.
What would happen if that failed?

Yeah right dude, my first semester at LSU in '08 had the Mississippi River about 15 feet from the top of the levee.

The Mississippi River would likely be re-routed down the Atchafalaya.
Permanently.

Pushing two loaded barges of crude to Krotz Springs. No assist boat but at certain bends it was scary.

From the river past the Vet School, past the Stadium and to the bottom edge of the journalism building...that's the floodplain.
Mike the Tiger will be Mike the Amphibian.

Krotz and Morgan Shitty would be in chaos
Infrastructure crossing the river would be fricked up

Baton Rouge is a floodplain!
Most of the developed areas in BR are not in the Mississippi River floodplain.
Is there potential for flooding? Absolutely. Is widespread flooding likely? Not really.

They have plans to open the spillways once the river reaches certain levels. For NOLA it will be 17ft.

I thought Highland Road was the edge of the floodplain? I'm probably wrong though, I just assumed it was

That was terrible. I lived in Beau Pre when that happened...water table was so high it was pushing water up through the cracks in the ground. Beau Pre had stagnant water everywhere that smelled like arse. Glad I got out of that place...

Yeah. Do you know how when you drive on Highland and then Drive on Burbank the same direction there's a change of relief between the 2? That may be the floodplain there.
The point I want to get across is that any low lying areas on the outside of the natural levees and man-enhanced levees need to be cautious. It's going to get wet if the river floods like they are expecting it to.
everything on the riverside of the railroad tracks will be underwater.
