Considering this topic is already 129 pages long and we have new people coming on here and asking the same questions from many pages ago, do the admins think it is time to maybe split this thread up and sticky a few different sections?
Maybe even it's own Board for a few months? Like the spill.
We are still two weeks away from the crest so I imagine we will keep getting new people on here all the time.
You can't expect the new people to scroll through so many pages. And I keep referring this thread to people to get info, as I am sure others do. I mean, my office manager likes a good NSFW thread as the next person, but maybe others don't.
I've been reading this thread from Day 1. We are 2 weeks from crest in BR. And Jindal said yesterday the water levels are going to be high through July.
Flood Board!
ETA: 129 pages while typing.....

I've asked the big man to essentially open up our own Morganza, the Weather Board, so that we can handle the flood of information on here.
See what I did there?

Thats why it is never flowed beyond 30%.
When the ORCS was undermined in 1973, they opened the gates and allowed more than 30% to flow because there is less pressure on the structure when it is allowed to pass water.

If the Morganza Spillway is designed to pass 600 kcfs of flow, does this take into account that most of the floodway is heavy forrested. It seems to me this would decrease the floodways capacity or was this accounted for?

Can't Chicken put the Hornets board to rest for a couple of weeks? It's a community service.
H-season starts in three weeks. Hope we don't get an early one.

Anyone have any pictures from the levee across from the vet. school from the last day or so?
I put some up on page 120 from the LSU facebook page

I guess we haven't triggered the ceiling for flow rate yet?

There is a gentleman about 20 years ago that was driving on the spillway, and saw water spewing out the other side. He found a dozer and started pushing dirt to try to plug the water. Many in the area believe that we were that close to losing the spillway at that time. The other issue no one is talking about is that the Core left water in the spillway for over 2 years even after the water ceded. I do not know why but i can only imagine that the seepage that occurred has had to weaken the structure somewhat. I am not afraid of the structure failing as much as I am afraid of the levee's around it failing. The problem is that when the gates are opened it will stress those levee's like never before.

True. But then they cut down the flow to below thirty percent and sold it as a thirty percent average.
As I have remarked before, the Corps states that it can open it up somewhat more than thirty percent provided it cuts it back later to average out. If push came to shove, if all else was breaking bad, I suspect that would open it up as much as they thought she could handle. All I can tell you is that the Corps takes that thirty percent limitation seriously.

Does anyone know if the water is higher now than in 73'? Seems if this flood is flirting with records from the 20's and 30's upriver that the same would be true down here.

Do you mean they left it open? Once water is "in the Spillway," it drains out to the south uncontrolled.

I think seepage from leaving the water in the forebay for well over 1 year after the flood of 2008 is the biggest issue. I can only imagine what that did to the ground and I wonder if that ground has recovered fully since then.

It is probably less forested now than it was in '73. Let me look at some historical aerials to confirm that.

No they didn't allow the water to drain out of the forebay, I want to say it was over 2 years that it held significant water, but I know it was over 1 year. They usually drain it by cutting the levee or barley opening a gate to allow the water to gently flow out. However after 2008 they did no such thing.
Gossip:
Many locals believe it was to get money from the feds based on their funding structure, as long as water was in the forebay they received a premium fee for maintenance.

My imagery only goes back to 98.

That's gossip with the ring of truth.

"One who knows the Mississippi will promptly aver...that ten thousand River Commissions, with the mines of the world at their back, cannot tame the lawless stream, cannot curb it or confine it, cannot say to it Go here or Go there, and make it obey; cannot save a shore that it has sentenced."

that capacity is probably more the rating of the gate itself than the actual floodway
once the water is through the gate, it should find plenty of room
