i had a history professor that told us that the word cracker came from the way white farmers with hogs would let them roam in the forest.
They would tag them, then when it was time to slaughter they would take bull whips and crack them out past where they thought the hogs were and force them into pens that were set up.
They would then check the markings and the hogs would go to their respective owners

Me too (always liked it). When Aaron Neville sang that after Katrina, shite made me cry.

The term "cracker" referred to a person from Georgia or north Florida.

Does anyone remember the version of this song that Marc Broussard did on Larry King Live a couple of days after Katrina? He basically took snippets of this song and put them in his song "Home".

Body all achin' an' racket wid pain,
Tote dat barge!
Lif' dat bale!
Git a little drunk
An' you land in jail.

Ah gits weary
An' sick of tryin'
Ah'm tired of livin'
An' skeered of dyin',
But ol' man river,
He jes'keeps rolling' along.
Yeah, we cool.
