I'm not sure I equate curiosity about a rare, possibly once in a lifetime such event, to a "celebration."

Maybe not all of the folks there, but there are more than a few that pose by the edge of the water with their smiling friends/families like they are standing next to *insert big Hollywood star's name here*. It's really kind of strange to see.

I've never understood why people want to go and look and take pictures!

This is a historic and major news event being discussed across the entire country and it's happening in our backyard. Of course people will be drawn to it and want to see it firsthand.

Like the family taking picures...why? So you can say "I was there when it was this high. You don't believe me? Here, look at these pictures!"

Because it's interesting and an event not seen in a lot of years.

I understand the morbid curiosity that you describe, but I see whole families going out like this is some event equivocal to a lunar eclipse...it's not a celebration...it's a flood.

It's not a flood (yet...hopefully never). It's THE river, and it will be at a stage not seen by most around here.

I really don't see the problem with it. Sounds like you're just trying to find something to bitch about. You even mentioned the morbid curiosity yourself.

I went down there twice today and amazed at the number of people coming and going. The same guys that were fishing at 11am were fishing at 2pm. Shame on LSU parking going around checking for university parking permits

It's the same height now as it was in 2008. Maybe next week i can understand.

It's really more annoying than anything else. Sorry. I'll drop it. I didn't realize that it was that big a deal.

Be sure to grab a large beach umbrella, some beach chairs, and extra beer. You might as well be fashionably comfortable while waiting on the rescue chopper ;)

I will admit, we took the kids to that spot yesterday on the way home from school. Why? So they could see how big the river is compared to the last time we went walking on it (several months ago), and get a better understanding and RESPECT for what is happening. Growing up along the Mississippi River, I was taught the awe and power of what it can do: what it can give us and what it can take away.

My daughter's school is less than a mile from the levee; she said yesterday they did a safety drill in case of a breech, and I know the kids are all talking about possibilities of a flood, so as a lesson in what can happen and why we're so concerned, I thought it might be best for them to see the actual river. Unfortunately, with the sensationalism portrayed on the news, it is sometimes scarier to have them just watch it on TV.

And while we didn't have a Disney photo op, I did take pictures so they can remember what it was like when they (hopefully!) see it lower at a later time.

It's all part of the event though. This has been going on for weeks (longer, obvious, but the hype up and talk has really geared up in the last week or two), and it's expected to be historic (worse than '73, and even possibly '27). Plus, it's just not normal to see the river this high, so it becomes sort of an attraction in itself.

You need university parking permits to park on the side of the road by the levee?
