I want to do it with pushing the trade deadline til the end of the reg season. So maybe the solution is a trade deadline roster lock for teams that aren't in the playoffs.

So teams are able to trade all the way til the last week of the season. Then non playoff teams can't pick from the waiver wire FA once the playoffs have started.

I don't think it's dumb at all.

Eta: Rick also is a contender this year after selling last year. LE is an example of what happens if you try and compete to the end.

waiting until the playoff start to lock non playoff teams isn't bad

but any earlier would be unfair

I tried to compete until the end last year, i traded my 1st-3rd draft picks away for non keepers who added depth. Now I'm contending again. I think selling out one year leading to competing the next year and going for it one year leading to complete disaster the next are mythical concepts. The results of each scenario are in reality based on the particular owner doing the actions and their abilities to overcome/take advantage of the situation to put themselves in the year before
