It increases the size of the board from 14 to 16 which can help bring in further diversity of opinions and it limits number of expiring seats to no more than 3 in any given year which will ensure a little more stability. Both seem like pretty common sense to me

Definitely yes to 2. It protects the money allocated to the state parks. Currently that money can be taken away and used for something else.

I tried to research it, and I saw no good reason for the proposed amendment. When I asked on this board, no Auburn folks piped in to tell me why I should feel differently.

according to al.com - that amendment was created to create more "diversity" on the AU board

I am pretty sick of this whole "diversity" thing - feels like divisive politics to me

Sigh.

So, besides them using the word diversity, what argument do you have that increasing the size of the board from 14 to 16 is a bad thing?

"Diversity of opinions" is language that means nothing to me. 14 is already too many people on a public board.

Why is this a problem?

Definite no for me. Too many earmarks in our state budget already. We need less earmarks, not more, and we definitely don't need a constitutional amendment that adds more.

Yet Alabama has 15.

Prevents you from having a year where you might be replacing half of your board. That type of turnover just isn't a good thing one way or the other.

Voted no on 14. I have no reason to bail out politicians for not following the law in the first place. it is basically a "let's make it up as we go" amendment.

This. Sorry they fricked up, when I frick up, I don't get bailed out without consequence. Voted no.

Okay? That's also too many, and I would have voted the same way had the ballot said "Alabama" instead of "Auburn."

I may have been willing to vote yes to increase it to 15 with the purpose of creating a tie-breaker vote, although I would actually prefer a decrease in numbers. Increasing to 16 (or 18, or 20, etc) just seems like you aren't doing anything at all other than wasting more money on salaries. Even then, though, I assume the governor can act as a tie-breaker if need be. If that isn't the case, then it makes even less sense to increase the number of members to an even number of members.

I may have been willing to vote yes for something like this if it wasn't tied to the addition of more board members.

Was that given to you at a polling place? Where in Birmingham?

If they handed that to you within 100 feet of the polling place, then that is absolutely illegal.

The Governor is automatically a member of the board, as a non-voting member. There are 13 voting members, one for each congressional district, one for lee county, and three at large members. This would add two more at large members. You think that is too many, that is fine, but frankly I don't really know why you'd vote on it anyways. it has no bearing on you anyways.

ETa: Also, you realize board members aren't paid salaries, right?

Currently, there are 9 seats set to expire in 2019. Your arbitrary opinion on what the correct number of board seats is aside, that type of change over is not desired. Especially when the state senate takes their sweet time approving new members.

Democrats are handing those out in the parking lots of polling places in Talladega too.

Yes. Downtown Birmingham at the Jefferson County Courthouse.

ETA: In line about 20-30 people from door into polling place (only about 5-10 people at a time allowed in polling place).
