What does PM see in Bianco?

Before the season started, I thought it was odd that PM recruited Bianco back to the team. I assumed Bianco saw the writing on the wall and decided he would have a better opportunity to play elsewhere. We had the #2 rated recruiting class coming in and the picture for him seem to be painted.
Then you fast forward to him pulling his name out of the transfer portal and splitting time at shortstop and CF to start the season? Is this PM being loyal to Bianco's daddy and telling him he is going to give him a fair chance to play?
Why the hell is PM putting the kid at short and CF? It is obvious that Bianco's skill set suits a corner infielder or a corner outfielder spot. SS/CF would make sense if the kid had been practicing their all offseason. To my knowledge, he has taken minimal reps at those positions his entire career.
Bianco is batting .141 for his career and has struck out 35 times in 99 plate appearances.

He probably sees practice that the rest of us don’t. That’s why he said Helmers fielded the ball better than anyone they’ve had at 3rd so far. To be honest, none of us know what Bianco is capable of. If he played consistently he may catch fire. None of us know. We all wonder why there was a question at SS after Arnold made the plays and hit a HR but the coaches clearly had not been satisfied yet from the practices and scrimmages.
“Why the hell is PM putting the kid at short and CF?”
Get used to this type of thing. PM has already said players will play in multiple spots so that if COVID causes people to miss then they will have guys who have played other positions.

MLB teams saw enough of Arnold to draft him as a SS
If that is your best option I think you ride with it

He hits in scrimmages and this team can’t hit

Same with Willis and Thompson and Hampton and Drost many other guys we’ve had who were drafted or going to be draft picks out of high school. We could go on forever with that list. It’s not indicative of who your starters are. They still have to earn that spot.

I get the practice thing, Bianco is probably hitting well in inner-squads. I just don't get the SS and CF move for him. If you truly want to give Bianco a shot, play him in a position that fits his skill set and that he is probably comfortable with.
I feel like one of PMs biggest downfalls is building confidence within his team.

What has Bianco done in 3 years that justifies him starting? Specially at SS & CF.

I get that Bianco doesn’t look like a CF or SS but he used to play there so he may very well be comfortable there. My concern would be more related to his range at those positions. I think it was just a move to keep in him the batting lineup. I don’t think he will be starting there.

We including this year also? So his freshman year, a short season last year, and the first two games of this year? Again, the coaches weren’t satisfied with what they were seeing so far so I don’t know what to tell you. People have to earn their spots and no one was separating themselves. Arnold may very well do that but he apparently had not done that yet leading up to the start of the season.

The majority of D1 baseball players played SS or CF in high school. Your best athletes generally field these positions.

You could maybe stomach Bianco in a stronger lineup, but just too much swing & Miss
Posted on 2/22/21 at 1:13 pm to GeauxTime9
Yeah I know and agree with that. You mentioned putting him somewhere that he is comfortable. He’s a baseball guy and played there growing up so how do we know he’s not comfortable at SS?

The CF thing happened due to an injury during the game. Mainieiri needed to get Arnold in the lineup but still wanted Bianco to get a shot, so he shuffled the defense around for that to happen. Bianco moving to CF had no effect on the outcome of the game.

Exactly. I don’t understand why people are so hung up on him moving out there after the injury.

A coach’s kid who brings his hard hat and lunch pale to work every day. He’s a student of the game, has a ton of grit, is sneaky fast, has deceptive speed. He has a professional at bat every time up and really makes the pitcher work

His dad probably told him entering the portal is a bitch move. If he wants to play go out an earn it.

In order to stay at LSU he had to have his scholarship percentage reduced.
A team can’t just unilaterally reduce a kid’s percentage.
He had to enter the portal, become a “free agent,” then return to LSU under a new agreement.
I have no idea if he actually looked around any. My guess is that if some solid mid major had offered him to play SS and bat third he’d have gone. But my understanding is that Bianco entering the portal was mostly a procedural maneuver.
