Garage Door Help

Left home yesterday garage door shut fine, but my son who was inside said it sounded extra loud when it shut. Came home and it would not open, it would try to open but stop about 3” up and stay there. I messed with a little, pulled the manual open lever, was able to slide it up manually. Hit the garage door open and the chain brought it back to the track piece and then it shut fine. But when I tried to open it again it did the same thing. Any suggestions of what it may be?

Do you hear any grinding? If so, the teeth in the garage door opener itself are broken. I'd also look at the spring to see if it's broken. That's all I got since that is what happened to me several years ago. New spring and opener, and I was good to go.

I had a missing/broken roller last week. The operation was erratic.
Make sure it’s lubed good. Cold weather can gel certain lubricants.

Same for me. Happens every year the first time temperature drops below 50 or so for first time. Garage door will only open 3 inches or so.
I spray it with penetrating oil and wait then come back with white lithium. Lasts all year until next year’s first cold snap.
ETA: Mine would still close fine once opened. But it would only lift 3 inches or so until I lubricate everything.

Also looked at the sensors and noticed one was green and one was ready. Tried to align them, but nothing changed.

If they were misaligned, the door wouldn't move at all.

Should be able to get it at Walmart or Home Depot or any major place. It’s just spray cans. I spray down all the moving parts, and I do the track too.
I spray penetrating oil first to loosen any gunk or rust. Next day I spray the white lithium grease. It makes the garage door considerably quieter too.
ETA: just watched the above posted YouTube video. That pretty much everything I do including the spring. I guess I can stop doing the track in the future.
The above listed can of garage door lubricant probably does the trick nicely too.

This! When you manually opened the door was it heavy? If so then you have a broken spring and that would make a loud noise.
The garage door should not take much effort to open it if it is properly balanced with the springs. The garage door opener is not made to lift the full weight of a door, they are made to provide movement and the springs still do the lifting.

Yep broken spring would be my first guess
Look and see if the cables on each side of the door (inside garage) are loose
The door should be heavy. If you have a car inside you can lift it up—gets lighter as you go
Be careful when letting it back down as the opposite occurs
