What's it like living on the Amite River? or a river in general?

Will be selling, then purchasing a home soon, near Baton Rouge/Prairieville.
Considering the possibility of moving to the Amite River. I'm a little older so looking for somewhere to enjoy my time off. Being near water seems like a viable option. Nest will be empty, so schools not an issue.
My office is in south BR, so I know there's the traffic issue, but my work hours aren't neccesarily typical.
Potential flooding is an issue, but obviously that's a risk to be measured most anywhere these days.
If you live out there, or have friends/family out there, what do hear? Would they repeat or just be happy to be escape it?

Every few years you have to worry about potential flooding unless you are really high. There are just as many cottonmouths out there as people. And Livingston baws still haven't figured out how the hell to drive through a traffic circle so the one by Fred's is always a cluster frick.

Every time I drive back home to BR to visit from Georgia and cross the Tchefuncte river on I-12, I always think "man it would be awesome to live in one of those houses".

I lived at our camp right off the Jourdan River in BSL while the wife was in nursing school in BR. It was awesome getting home from work on nice days and just dropping the boat off the lift into the water.
If you buy on the main part of the Amite just understand that there will be plenty boat traffic and it won't be at idle

keep in mind that most house "on" the amite are on a bank with a very steep dropoff to the river that makes it mostly impossible to just saunter down to the water and hang...at least the ones that dont flood every year

I have lived on the Diversion canal for 18 years. We are on our second house and love it. Gets busy in the sunmer on the weekends, calm the rest of the year. Homes on the Diversion will hold their value better than the Amite

Purchased my first home on Amite River in French Settlement. As a bachelor, it was great. Boat lift and launch in the yard. 5 acres of land on opposite side of road for a little deer, duck, and squirrel hunting. Amite most of the time is quieter with less boat traffic than diversion. Over the 5 years I was there the yard and the road to house did flood 4 times. Home was 8 ft off the ground so it never flooded but it was definitely an inconvenience when the road flooded. A wife and 2 kids made it time for a change as the house wasn't quite big enough.
All in all, I enjoyed it while we were there and if I were closer to retirement age I'd consider being on the water again.

I pass through BR often in the mornings driving along i-10. Most of your traffic issues will happen after you leave i-10 getting to work, I normally lose 5-8 minutes due to traffic from Prairieville running into BR compared to less traffic times. I drive hwy 22 to I-10 in Sorrento, zero traffic along this route in the morning unless you get behind a school bus.

We just moved to the area in January. We chose to live on the water (not the Amite but close)and I commute to Bluebonnet daily. We love it. Even though the water has my back patio covered (falling today finally) and the weekend boat traffic is more than I expected (thanks Tickfaw 200)...I don’t regret it.
