I have always wondered what starving Vietnamese children think when they’re sewing these these clothes together.

Dude, just start losing one pound at a time.
At his size it would be 5 at a time. Hopefully, writing that was his wake-up call.

Nobody knows that number—not my wife, not my doctor, not my closest friends.
I'm sure they've guessed around that.

At the same time, you'd have to be a cold hearted MFer not to feel compassion for someone like this.
Not shocked at all by the lack of compassion in the responses here so far and I doubt many of them actually read past your excerpt.
I hope this guy is able to continue with his weight-loss. Writing all of this (his book) was probably really cathartic for him and helped crystallize what he needs to do.
ETA: I'm sure he goes more in-depth in the book, but it sounds like he's trying to address the depression and other issues that cause him to overeat. The "just eat less/move more" crowd tends to neglect the mental health component IMO.

But what really scares me is the chance that I might land on somebody. I glance at the people wedged around me. None of them could take my weight. It would be an avalanche.
More like a flab-alanche.

I have no compassion for fatties. Get up off your lazy arse and start working for a healthier body instead of feeling bad for yourself

The article is worth reading.
He spends a good bit of time addressing "Why don't you just diet and exercise."
I learned something new.
Basically, your body fights to stay the biggest it has ever been. So when someone loses weight their metabolism slows down and their body craves food until they are back to being fat again.
He also addresses the psychological issues people that fat have which encourages people to overeat chronically.
The writer made some excuses for his weight, but he gave an honest look from his perspective on how he got that way, and why he stayed that way.
It was a insightful read.

I wonder how much homeboy spends on groceries. I'd imagine you have to pack away a lot of food to sustain 460 lbs.

You are technically right, but you can control and minimize that and it doesn't cause you to be 460 pounds. You don't get that big because of biology.

I know a chick who's cousin weighed over 1000 pounds. He was like the 6th or 7th fattest man in history and lived in Nebraska. Cant remember his name but there was documentarys on him where they called him the "half ton man"
Guy I hunt with was a paramedic while in college. They had to go get some dude who had fallen in his trailer. He fell in a doorway and was wedged in it and could not get up.
He weighed over 700 pounds and had not left his trailer in over 3 years. His momma would bring him food and stuff, she was his enabler.
They had to cut the door frame out to get him up, then cut the front door to make it wider because he could not squeeze through it.

I don't know, let me go lift your mom up again and walk around for awhile.
