Hard to have any sympathy for either side in this debacle.
The player didn't exactly look like he was being shut out of minutes. If he had over 490 minutes and the younger guy had like 540 (and one kid with 200 something) that is a whole lot different than saying he was just riding the pine. Plus, the guy didn't really come across that well in the quotes attributed to him.
On the other hand, a lot of coaches at the youth and even high school level are pretty clueless when it comes to actually managing, motivating and getting the most out of all of their players. This coach/coaching staff seems to have just let the team get away from him.
With a little foresight and some basic communication skills, It's not that difficult to formulate, explain and implement a coherent playing time/substitution plan which, while it might not make everyone ecstatic can maintain the morale and spirit of a team.
Sounds like a fail/fail to me.

Depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If your goal is to have a smoothly functioning team that wins as many games as their talent allows, probably could put a little more effort into it. If the goal is to come across as a tough guy or is motivated by fear of talking to players about playing time, it might be the best some can do.

People that are saying the kid should have been playing because the stats are basically even are discounting the kids obviously shitty attitude.

Ditto. When I was playing youth baseball and started to get into the upper echelon leagues, I had this coach who loved to play favorites. Never mind the fact I was one of the best hitters on the team this particular year (.432 batting average, led the team in RBIs and stolen bases), and never mind the fact I was without a doubt the best outfielder on the team and one of the best outfielders in our particular division, he would play his step-son's best friends over me all the time just to score "cool points." There were times where I wanted to take a ground ball I had fielded in the outfield and just throw it over the fence.
I was really good at baseball and stopped playing mainly because of him and the coach I would have the next year who did the EXACT same thing.

High School sports are very political these days. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good you are but who your parents are. Not saying this is the case here but could be possible. Could be a reason like this that he isn't starting this year since he started last year.

I agree. My senior year in HS we had a first year coach and a very small Senior class and not a great junior class. When it was clear we were not making the playoffs about halfway through the season, he replaced or severely limited playing time of seniors for sophomores. Awesome reward for sticking it out through a contentious coaching change and watching from sidelines as team went winless to last 5 games. After shitting on 2 classes, we made the playoffs (16 teams made it) and that great soph class was now seniors. First round loss. I laughed, but would not have quit on my team to spite coach.

The best part is that this goal tied the game 2-2, and then the opposing team scored on the third stringer to win the game.
