I've seen two of those films (Argo and Flight). One is deserved, the other is not.

Argo was fricking great, and I've heard simply wonderful things about Skyfall and Lincoln.

Flight looks like your standard Denzel movie. I won't be seeing it.

It isn't from what I've read. He plays a really fricked up guy. Not likeable.

Ebert is such an overrated hack. I cant believe he's taken seriously as a movie critic. He'll give out 4 stars to any move that pretenses to be 'different,' and then will give the Usual Suspects 1 1/2 stars because he didn't understand it. Not to mention his writing style is a second-rate rip off of Pauline Kael's.

I love some under the radar/foreign/indie films. But I hate that EVERYcritics favorite movies each year fall under those categories.

I liked Tree of Life and The Artist. But it's like if you didn't have Tree of Life, The Artist and Melancholia as your top movies last year you weren't a critic.

I like Dave White, he has a nice blend or capability of judging mainstream and indie on the same levels. I like a critic that can say "yeah Rise of the Planet of the Apes was on par with Tree of Life."

To some of the more ridiculous ones it has to be a movie that %90 of people haven't even heard of.

I have been reading Ebert's review pretty religiously since the late 90's. I have noticed a BIG upsurge in his 3 1/2 and 4 star reviews in the last few year. I think surviving cancer has really mellowed him.

Quite possibly. I prefer James Berardinelli/Reelviews. Movies really have to earn their 4 star status from him, and he doesnt buy into hyped bullshite like Ebertdoes

Are you sure you don't mean Armond White?

If anything, Ebert tries not to be pretentious like Kael.

I still remember he originally panned Blade Runner (later revised after years of hate mail) and he hated Fight Club...calling it Macho Porn.

But I like him...his blog is first class with reader input.

Siskel was always the better half in Siskel and Ebert IMO.

Ebert has had a couple of notable whiffs during his career (Raising Arizona), but to call him an "overrated hack" is absurd.

However, his star ratings have definitely increased since his medical problems. And his political grandstanding has become a huge turnoff.

He's not what he was. I rarely read his reviews anymore. He's off.
