There are probably half a dozen squirrels around my house who are constantly building nest in corners, running all over the roof, digging up the yard, etc. Well last week as I’m in the yard I see one carrying a stick climb into the side of the chimney. Obviously he’s built a nest in there so I called our pest control company to come take a look and see what all could be done. He came today and he quoted $1700 to remove the nest and seal everything up so they don’t come back again. This seems like an exorbitant amount. Is this the going rate for something like this? In my head I was thinking a couple hundred dollars. Maybe I’m way off. The roof is very steep and having to get into the chimney will be a pain I’m sure but this just seems really high. I’m going to call a couple other places to get another quote or two but just wanted to make sure that $1700 isn’t a crazy amount.

I can kill them. That’s not the problem. I’m talking about proofing the house and sealing up all the crevices they’ve been getting into. Especially the chimney. Ain’t no way in hell I can clean that out.

For what it's worth I had an issue with birds in my chimney.
I covered the openings with expanded metal.

1/2 inch hardware cloth over all openings. Large glue traps work well. I had a fox squirrel pull a nut off. Lol. He didnt return.

You literally just have to seal the chimney up so no animals or water can get in. Kill the squirrels outside your house first. Don’t want them to die in your home.

I paid a similar amount to repair my chimney to a roofer. They spent two days just cutting siding and replacing rotten materials, painting, cricket addition. End game was just sealing it up so no more holes. Getting on a roof can be dangerous if it’s a significant pitch and it makes the job challenging. $1700 could be a good price for killing and sealing. Could be highway robbery, just depends.

I had a squirrel problem at a starter home in Shenandoah. Killed squirrels with a conibear trap and sealed a hole in the siding to the attic with a board.

Don’t do this. They’ll die in your house and the smell is how you’ll know.

Yeah I’ve got a small dog that if I accidentally killed might lead to a divorce. I was thinking trusty old pellet gun. I am right in the middle of a subdivision so it’s the best I can do. Have another guy coming to give me an estimate, just hoping that first guy was way off.

I’ve always heard rat poison was an anticoagulant and, as a side effect of the blood poisoning delivering the infidel squirrel to his 70 virgins, it inexplicably gives the animal ingesting it an overpowering, insatiable thirst. The vermin scurries to find the most accessible water source (usually outside the house) and dies near it/en route.

I’ve used it in the attic when they (the squirrels) mounted their Winter Offensive of 2019. The enemy was never recovered on our soil. However, a full withdrawal came before Christmas. But not before laying waste to 4, 5, maybe a half dozen tyrants attempting to scratch, claw, and gnaw the fricking cedar exterior, tar paper, and insulation over the bay window in the kitchen.

Good luck. Been fighting them for over 2 years now. Traps, poison, sheet metal, flashing, pellet guns, 22lr, high frequency noise emitters, 3 different pest control companies, and a wildlife biologist. Every time I think I've won they end up back in the attic.

Same here. Embarrassed to admit some of the stuff I've tried. Rat trapped a monster male in the Spring, closed a possible entry point and things went quiet until July. Will get up there in a few weeks when the roof gets replaced. Chopping down a nuisance tree I have in the back yard should help.

24/7/365 blaring talk radio and bright lights didn't do shite.
Might sprinkle massive amounts of Cayenne powder next time in the attic.

Bird feeder in yard near a window.
Pellet gun with scope.
Keep at it.
Takes a while but you can really thin out the herd

This reminds me. One of my friends has a pump rifle just sitting by a baited door trap by his house. When he walks by, if there’s a squirrel, shoots it, tosses it and resets the trap. Rinse repeat. Some of you baws give up too easy. frick them little fuzzy bastards

I’ve got squirrels and chipmunks to deal with. When we moved to KC and I saw the first chipmunk I was like ohhh how cute. Not now. It is war. They are horrible

I had squirrels building nest on top of my stucco columns. I lathered petroleum jelly all over the tops, haven’t come back since.
