Hello all, need some friendly advice. I’m liking the 203 bay boat and the one I found has a 115 Yamaha but I’m wanting the 150. There is a 5k upgrade difference which is fine but the salesman said it’s only 5mph faster than the 115 that’s on it. Would you folks get the 150 over the 115? I’ll be spider rigging for crappie and occasional Lake Chuck fishing for specs. Thx

I've ridden in a 203 with a 150. Got plenty of pep but doesn't feel overpowered by any means. I'd get the 150.

I've got an 183 with the 115hp on order that should be in in 3 weeks. Can't wait...

Get the 150. No doubt about it. Performance is more than just top end speed.

Any guesses on the gas consumption difference between a 115 and 150?

Buddy of mine has that exact boat with the 115. I’ve fished out of it 10+ times, he wishes (and I agree) he’d have gotten the 150 on it instead.

Always get the max HP on a boat, I've never heard anyone say they wish they had gone down on power.

I have a 2020 Excel Bay Pro 203 with a 115 SHO. It tops out at 42 mph @ 6300 rpm and i cruise at 35 mph @ 5500 rpm burning 3.5 mpg. Cruise speed is based on 5 adults, trolling motor, 2 trolling motor batteries, full tank of fuel and full 48qt ice chest. I am propped with the powertech scd4 17p. I don't see the need to gain 3mph with the 150. I pull kids on a big tube, fish, cruise etc... The boat pops right out of the water and does everything i ask of it without question. Propped as is it doesn't care too much about how light or heavy the boat is loaded.

This is a great setup for anyone asking.

The 115 would be fine.

No way it’s only 5mph difference and I agree to go with max hp fir when you are loaded and for resale value.

Go look at the Yamaha perf bulletins for the Excel and engines.

Perf Bulletin

The F150 pushes the 22’ model to 52 mph so you’ll go faster than that…the F115 does 44 mph. I’d say 10 mph seems more realistic.

I own a '18 203 with a 150. When I bought mine, I did not want the top speed to be mid 40's and constantly running at max rpm. I do not frequently run over the mid 40's, but I like that I can run 43 - 45 at 4600 rpm and top out low 50's at 5300 rpm, assuming normal fishing load. I'm running 19p prop on a Merc 150. I also have a Bobs Hyd. jack plate. David Wade's in BR set the engine height and installed the JP for me.

The smaller engine will also be running at max
Rpms thus worse mph
Bigger engine wont be run at max
Rpms as much
More wear on smaller engine
Go big

I doesn’t make any sense to me either but that’s what he told me. He has a 150 located so I may go that route. I bought a 24 foot South Bay pontoon from him before that had a 115 and it was severely under powered. I don’t want to make that mistake again.

He’s a salesman so he’s probably talking to push his stock.

And honestly it’s probably around 5mph cruise. Top end is likely more though.

But yeah as said max HP is always preferred especially on resale.

Best to never under power a boat in my experience.
