I was not initially thrilled with the Payton Turner pick. "We took him too soon", many contended. While the storylines are not completely identical, I can't help but see several parallels between Patyon's selection and that of Saints great Joe Johnson.

Joe Johnson was the Saint's 1st Round pick in 1994 (13th overall). Defensive End from a "non-major" program. "He was graded by many no higher than a 2nd round pick", was a constant post draft assessment.

While there is no guarantee that history will repeat itself in this instance, I hope that Payton can achieve the type of success that Joe attained with the Saints. I doubt that many now regret that 1994 1st Round selection. Just some food for thought.

Well, one can only hope that Payton won't emulate "EVERY" trait of Mr. Johnson.

Payton is an elite athlete with elite measurable. If you are going to take a chance on someone at the bottom of the first, he is literally the kind of player you look for.

Davenport is a big dude.

Turner has 3" longer wing span. 2" longer arms. 1 3/8" bigger hands. 2" higher vertical. Faster 3 cone and 20 yd shuttle. Turner is a freaking freak.

Almost every negative on him seems to be technical aspects of his game that coaching should help with. Seems to be highly regarded as an ascending talent. I’ll never have an issue with taking swings at potentially dominating pass rushers.

Joe Johnson was so good. Equally stout against the run & pass. He definitely proved the Saints right and the naysayers wrong.

Not that you were making it, but as far as player comparisons go, Turner's skill-set/versatility is closer to Cam Jordan, and even Davenport. I don't recall Joe Johnson ever taking snaps at DT, especially with Glover/Hand manning those spots.

Honestly my biggest knock on him is that he has been banged up. I think if it is a normal year and he stays healthy then he is a top 20 pick. In 5 games he had 25 tackles, 10.5 for a loss, 5 sacks, and a forced fumble. That’s pretty disruptive. I actually did not like any of the projected first round defensive ends and I think some teams had Turner higher on their board than analysts.

Phillips - Extensive Concussion history
Paye - hasn’t done much. People blame the system
Rousseau- One year wonder/ Most of his production cam from nose/expected limited ceiling
Oweh-Litterally no sacks last year
Tryon- Decent production but was listed behind turner in rankings by some

No. Because a dozen people who couldn’t name 5 real life GMs absolutely KNOW he would have been there in the second round.

You know—research and stuff.

Agreed, Paye was the one I liked the most. Phillips will be good but the concussion history is scary. Don’t think I could take him in the first.
