Yep. Keep moving the goal posts of what's acceptable because everything you set out to do gets in the way of getting loaded.

I'm taking this with a grain of salt. But he doesn't have to lose it.

"Rock bottom" is basically going through an existential shite storm. There's a reason he's drinking so much. When he stops and realizes that everything he thinks makes him happy now in life is failing him, then he'll have to choose some new values in life. It's a pain process, and it's necessary in order to build stronger mental and emotional resilience. It's not an easy process by any means...and many give up. But once a person realizes that "Rock Bottom" is really just a "New Beginning," things start to become a little less scary. The pain process becomes almost enjoyable...because it brings about new, healthy happiness and relationships. The tail end of that existential shite storm is when the most transformation begins.

'Rock bottom' is usually 1 of 2 things. It's either the point where someone realizes they can't continue living this way anymore and cleans up, or it's where that person reaches the point of no return and never recovers.

Rock bottom doesn't really have a solid definition in real time....it can only be defined in hindsight IMO.
