Prepare to be unhappy if you are a taxpayer. Every salary includes a pension.
That doesn't bother me, I wish everyone could get a pension. We used to take care of workers in this country so much better than we do now. I'm not going to begrudge the few that still get the benefits we all used to enjoy.
There's probably some largesse and corruption with this shite in the big blue states, but there's a lot of more important and more wasteful spending that I would go after first.

Rewarding someone who contributed to society for 30 years is what’s killing America?
Not handing out taxes to deadbeats that stay home and bbq and drink 40 oz on their porch while we work?

If they got rid of the pensions they would have to start paying market wages and social security. It would be worse for the state financially. Also the retirees would not be on the health insurance plans anymore. That would shrink the pool of participants and raise the states portion (employees too) of their health insurance. A friend and I were discussing it the other day, they don’t pay social security so they don’t get that when they retire either and if they have it from another job it is reduced.
She said she has been there long enough that it doesn’t make sense for her to leave bc she would have to start a 401k at a private employer from scratch. She did say her same job in the private sector pays 15 to 20 more a year plus bonuses. She did point out that while it is guaranteed future income she can’t pull a large amount out if she needed or invest large portions how she wants.
Also if you think there are a lot of crappy state workers now, eliminating the pensions would make it worse.

When this bubble does burst (it surely will) I wonder how all of these state and federal employees are going to handle the mass layoffs/pension reductions which are sure to follow.
