Offensive Line

We finally have reached a point this season where we can look at a single issue & diagnose it as a fatal flaw.
-Defense consistently improving
-Freshman QBs show promise but need a run game in addition to further development
-I think the opt-outs are overblown this year. Yes, the initial attrition was debilitating — but I don’t think you see the rest of this stuff in a normal year or going forward.
Address the offensive line issues in recruiting and short-term through the portal the best you can... get Brennan back... develop those young QBs...
And we are tracking to get this ship righted.

The problem is that we have appeared to swing and miss in these departments the last few years. Shanahan is not an SEC center. Admittedly I don't watch him every play, but when I do he is getting driven into the backfield.
The big name recruits, ie Thomas, Bradford, Turner, Martinez have not been able to get on the field. There's still time for them to improve, but I guess we have no choice but to wait and see.

I read you loud and clear... and agree.
But a few of those guys that haven’t seen the field yet could certainly improve. Cregg catches hell over recruiting, but he has actually been solid with managing personnel and moving guys around due to injury etc.
Some of the more recent O-line struggles has to go on the young QBs as well.
If Cregg can’t get it done, they’ll move on in time. But — at least we can point to something and say “fix this” as opposed to the fully dysfunctional dumpster fire we appeared to be at times this year.

Hines and Rosenthal have been the weakest upfront. They whiff on too many blocks/protections. Shanahan, Ingram, and Deculus have been more consistent than the other 2. Cam Wire, in my opinion, has been very solid off of the bench and filling in for Rosenthal. I would start him at LT.

He certainly has a lot of room for improvement, but he is a guy that could improve with an entire offseason in the weight room.
He's a senior, but I hope he uses his Covid year of eligibility to return and get better.

I took some time today to compare LSU's two deep on the O-line vs our main competition. I realize Recruiting rankings is only one factor, but it is a factor. Here is the average recruiting rating of every two deep player starting for these teams this year.
Ohio State 0.96
Alabama 0.95
Georgia 0.93
Oklahoma 0.91
Clemson 0.90
LSU 0.90
Florida 0.89
Auburn 0.89
Texas AM 0.88
We need better O-line recruiting. Kardell, Dumervile, Dellinger and hopefully Leigh will paint a better future.

Agree, he isnt there yet, but one season and offseason with SEC experience and training hopefully make him better

Yes, but again, player rankings are a single indicator and not the defining factor of if an O-line is good or not (player development, coaching, in-game adjustments, etc).

I think you are right on here. I'm curious to see which of these lineman stay. Deculus has been here 5 years and may just be ready to move on. If we can keep the other 4 starters in the program and have a regular offseason of training and competition, this can be a much improved unit next season. That will be a great litmus test of Cregg's abilities as a coach. Then we can see again that he can improve personnel with adequate time (2018-2019 as the first example).

I just don't feel they are being coached up. To me Cregg has been a disappointment in coaching while being average on the recruiting trail. Clyde had to spin as soon as he got the handoffs last year so it's not something that's started this year.

That happened a lot less once we got past the Auburn game last year. Cush and Charles made a big difference. You could also see a big drop off in the games when Charles was suspended before Ingram got cleared to play.

Well, you posted that list and your conclusion was that LSU needs to recruit better.
My opinion is that we had a great offensive line last year, lost a lot of talent and are in a rebuilding year.
Spare me the "we don't rebuild, we reload" nonsense. No one in college football history lost what LSU lost last season.
LSU has good young talent on the offensive line and has recruited well the last two years.
LSU needs to, of course, continue that with the 2021 class. If the sign Dellinger, Leigh, Makaneole, and possibly a JUCO or grad transfer, that will keep them in a solid position for the future.

I mean, chances are we are better at O-line by recruiting higher rated prospects.
Of course we have Damien Lewis and Cushenberry (that were 3 stars) starting as rookies for the NFL now.

I was actually impressed with the rankings as I thought the disparity would have been larger.
Nice work though — I think one of the keys with this line is keeping some consistency in terms of these guys playing together. I think it’s imperative that they, as a team, show some fight in these last games to maintain buy in & keep everyone around for next season.
I’m not sold on the whole “Cregg is bad” argument just yet. The guy did a really fantastic job in a handful of chaotic revolving door situations due to injuries/suspensions if memory serves me correctly.
