Late 30's, lower back and knee issues that have helped me pack on the pounds over the years since I've been out. Looking to get back in the gym and will more than likely be doing a lot of solo workouts. I'm pretty familiar around the gym, but looking for some type of app or program to help me build and follow some type of routine. Given my injuries, deadlifts and squats will be non-existent to very limited at best, but open to just about anything else. Open to any and all ideas. What y'all got?

Depending on how bad your lower back issues are, rowing is zero impact and a full body workout.

I would not rule out deadlifts and squats. It’s possible you have injuries that can be rectified. Have you seen a specialist that deals with athletes? A general physician or even an orthopedics specialist who don’t deal with athletes won’t do what it takes to get you performing again. I’m making a lot of assumptions here, but it’s pretty common.

You could start BJJ, it won’t make your body feel any better but all of our joints and ligaments are just as fricked up as yours so you’ll be in good company

But on a serious note, I had bad injuries and muscle imbalances before I started years ago and the combination of being stretched involuntarily, doing yoga-ish positions, and moving another person’s weight in a dynamic manner and working every muscle in my body fixed a LOT of my problems.

I think it’s worth a look for you, it could also reintoduce you to doing something with a team and put you back in a good environment with a lot of other ex-military guys

I’m an old army vet and I feel your pain. I’ve had multiple knee and back surgeries. I promise with proper form you can do squats and deadlifts. Start with just using the bar and slowly work your way up in weight.

Someone also recommended using a rower, I use that and go for a brisk walk/jog. That impact hurts worse than lifting weights

Laird Hamilton's pool workout system would be the most beneficial. Maximize muscular effort, while taking away much of the stress on your joints. Called XPT

You would be surprised how one compounds into the other, fixing those lower back issues go a long way.

There are ways to still do these lifts

Also find a reverse hyper, it will do wonders for your lower back.
