What would hiring SVG say about future roster construction?

SVG has said he is an adaptable coach and will run systems to suit the talent on the court. His most success was obviously in Orlando, running his 4 Out system, a forerunner of things to come in the NBA. That system could work pretty well with Zion and BI, but not sure we have the rest of the horses to do it now.

But SVG does not like to play young players in games if they "aren't ready". He has said in the past he doesn't believe that you really learn in games. You have to prove you're ready to play before you can get in a game.

We have a lot of young players. With that attitude, it seems highly unlikely we would trade, say, Jrue Holiday for younger players and picks.

It likely also means we do not trade JJ given their connection.

Does it mean we move guys like Hayes, NAW, Didi for Vets? Do we keep 13 or shift it for veteran players? 2nd round picks?

At the end of the day I don’t think it will be his decision to move on from the rooks. I’d imagine David griffin isn’t going to change the direction of a franchise for a coach.

I don't think it will be his decision, but if there's going to be "synergy" as Griffin probably loves to say, the Coach and POBO have to be on the same page.

There's going to be a direction they go that they may not have gone with an inexperienced HC.

If anything, it tells me they will make small moves to the roster and essentially run it back as opposed to rebuilding.

Maybe let Favors walk and bring in someone like Baynes and sign a vet pg like augustin.

I was hoping one of Lonzo or Jrue would have been moved this offseason.

I think I saw Crewz post about both Baynes and DJ Augustin, both have SVG connections.

I agree that it means not trading Jrue and JJ they'll mostly run it back.

I don't think you necessarily move the young guys, he should like the 2 way potential of both NAW and Hayes.

Didi staying in Australia and resigning Moore seems like something we'd see. And I believe Trajan has already said whoever we draft would spend a lot of time in the GLeague.

I do think you probably give up on Frank and replace him with a vet. Okafor/Kenrich I could see staying or going depending on if Stan has any connections to any specific vet minimum guys.

To me the biggest question is still Lonzo. When he broke down the roster with Zach Lowe, he seemed comfortable with who Lonzo is, and even seemed to think he brought balance to the roster by being a C&S player in the half court.

I didnt know about Baynes and SVG connection so that’s a bonus. I’m not sure what Favors would command, but I think we can get similar production at a cheaper price with some of the bigs available.

As for DJ, I want a pg that can get us into our offensive sets early in the shot clock and not turn the ball over so damn much.

I believe Baynes was in Detroit at the same time as SVG.

I saw an article this morning mentioning the GLeague is not a guarantee next year and instead they would expand the NBA rosters. Wonder if that influences their decision at 13.

NAW and Hayes should both be ready for regular rotation minutes this upcoming season. Part of our new coach's job will be to use camp to get them ready. We aren't trading either of those guys unless we're making a deal for someone like Beal.

I agree that a G-League season looks unlikely at this point. The Euroleague looks to be successfully playing at this point, but they have had canceled games due to positive COVID tests. I think that, if there's no G-League, draft-and-stash becomes even more attractive.

I'm pretty sure he was
Think they signed him in free agency with an overpay

I'd love Augustin and he would probably love to come home
We have been missing this type of pg for a few years.

I see no way you bring Frank the tank back. He just isn't that good

Given the pool of candidates we are considering, given there seems to be no indication Griffin is chasing any one candidate, in my mind any choice he makes will in part be because that person shares Griffin’s vision and demonstrates a willingness to accept and adhere to that agenda. And that Griffin sees the best path forward in how that particular coach will execute that.

So I don’t think, for instance, that if Griff feels we need to let Jrue or JJ move on because they aren’t on our time schedule, or doesn’t want to trade off all our young prospects, that SVG is going to have any sort of leverage to force that. And frankly, if getting SVG was going to drastically alter what Griffin feels needs to happen with this roster going forward, SVG probably wouldn’t be a finalist.

But I do agree with some of the critiques you have and it concerns me with SVG, who I think is a good coach, but probably somewhere in the lower second tier. Where I would put Doc. Which to be clear still makes him an above average to really good coach, but there is some curmudgeon qualities that he has, like his brother, that I think hinder more than help him in terms of adapting to a increasingly younger, evolving, and tactically shifting game.
