August 1, 1941 - Japan is Getting Hungry, Barbarossa is Confused

Japan needs resources for its seemingly endless war in China, but where to look for them? And who might have a problem with it? Meanwhile in the Soviet Union, Hitler's forces have been diverted from the Moscow Road, and are on the move in the north and the south.

Russians would have fought on even if Moscow fell like they did against Napoleon. They would have just scorched it. The government had already relocated to Kuibyshev and they still had Ural Mountain factories. But I agree sending Guderians panzers South was a blunder

But Moscow being the rail and logistic hub it would have been extremely difficult for the soviets to continue supplying factories, front lines etc. it wouldn’t have been over but Germany would have had multiple avenues for victory and the Soviet’s would have needed some luck and German stupidity.

It was a mistake, but he had no chance of beating Russia. They would just retreat into Asia with impeccable supply lines to the USA.

I’ve been following him from the very beginning over 100 episodes ago! He is a great teacher and uses multiple sources and authors in his episodes. The buildup to Barbarossa had me on the edge of my seat for so many weeks. Additionally, it looks like the buildup to dec 7 has definitely started.

Hitler’s biggest blunder was not primarily going south first and securing the oil reserves of the Balkans. Oil was Hitlers primary problem. Hitler lost the war because of no oil, period. Being stupid didn’t help either.
He had no need for Stalingrad early.
Moscow woulda been nice early but he needed oil.

Japan needed everything, oil, iron and food.
They were insane to spread out onto remote islands and strand forces. They were so spread out they couldn’t defend what they needed. US submarines didn’t make things any better for them. Rivalry between their Army and Navy was a huge problem that undermined their success. Their big mistake early was sending forces to the Aleutian Islands and not concentrating forces at Midway. Their early arrogance and feelings of racial superiority undermined their planning and execution of battle plans.

A lot of folks don't know that just 20 years earlier, Japan was an ally to us in WWI.
Japan has been a militaristic country having lived under the Bushido Code.
Japan was looking to expand its power and dominance on the world stage but was/is very limited in natural resources.
The US had been supplying Japan with oil, and many other raw materials including steel that was being used to build up their military.
When Japan invaded China, FDR cut off their oil, steel and other materials.
The mold had been set, Japan was being squeezed and looked else where, mainly for oil to the south of Japan.
PM Hediki Tojo was highly militaristic and stoked the nationalist fevor amoung the Japan population.
Vice Admiral Yamamoto was dead set against going to war with US and knew that the US had too many resources that would never be matched by the Japanese.
In fact, Yamamoto had attended school in the US and was very well aware of the US industrial and military might.
