I guess no more than $300 or so? Her birthday is still a few months away, so I can save if need be.

ETA: Idk what cameras cost.

A highly useful camera at that price point is the Canon model...

I got nothing.

You need to double or triple that. If $300 is your budget, spend it on a photographer to take some nice candid photos of the two of you. Go for a walk in a nice park or arboretum, maybe around some azaleas or other spring flowers. She'll like the romantic surprise 100x more than a cheap camera that takes crappy photos.

Canon EOS 7Ti. Got one about a month ago with CC rewards. Search amazon. there are several deals with accessories. Expect to pay about $700. Some are cheaper, like I said there are several deals with or without accessories.

The best camera is the one you have with you. Get her either a cell phone with a really nice camera or a small point n shoot she can keep in a pocket or purse.

Obligatory - Pics of wife?

Most good DSLR bodies are over $1,000, and then you have the lenses after that.

I have a Panasonic ZS-100 and it is the nicest compact/point & shoot that I have ever seen. Multiple modes and a pretty good zoom. You can pick one up from Amazon for around $300. The newer ZS-200 is about twice the price.

Whatever you get, make sure it shoots RAW format and get the software to process the RAW files. You can pull some amazing photos out of RAW files that you would have just tossed if you simply looked at the jpegs created by the camera.

He a Fuji or Sony mirrorless. Fuji makes the best 18-55 kit lens available.

Encourage her to learn to use all the features on her smartphone camera.

Phone cameras have pretty much (not quite) eliminated the point-and-shoot camera market.

And the professional/pro-am market is evolving to mirrorless. You can get into a DLSR or mirrorless camera body, but the real money is going to get invested in the lenses. And DLSR lenses and mirrorless lenses are not compatible.

I would wait about a year and let mirrorless settle down and look at the starter mirrorless cameras from Sony or Canon.
