I'm am in the process of researching to buy a computer to use pretty much strictly for iRacing. There are some deals on the internet for around $450 with shipping that would be overkill for what I need. Anyone have any tips on where to look? Or does anyone have one laying around that they want to get rid of?

For reference, this is the unit I was looking at
- 3.4 GHz i5-3570
- NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB
- 240 GB SSD + 1TB HDD
- Keyboard & Mouse

I'm really out of my element here and have researched but it's exhausting when I don't really know what I'm looking at. It'd be nice to find something comparable or better without breaking the bank. I'll be running 2 monitors with a 3rd eventually and won't be doing any hardcore gaming.

do what i did and watch a bunch of linus tech tips and other similar youtube channels with gaming builds

they'll get you up to speed on the best values and specs to look for, based on the level of your needs

even if you don't build a computer, they'll let you know how what your buying works

Those specs sound suspect to me. I'm not aware of the game you are playing, but really unless it's old you would benefit from a higher processor like a amd r7 3 series or even r5 3 series. 1660 would be minimum gpu I would even entertain with more value coming from a 2060 or 2070 especially running dual/triple monitors. Whatever you do, make sure it has a m.2 ssd for the operating system and a good large regular HDD.

Your frame rates will be nice and smooth using a 2060 or 2070 with the 2070 you could go on up to 4k if you have a monitor system to support it. I wouldn't buy an Intel system anymore unless it's drastically cheaper than the amd ryzen 2 or 3k series processors. But it all depends.... do you want the cheapest you can run your program on or what you would enjoy the most? They're two completely different systems.

You've been watching the FOX coverage of iRacing, haven't you!

We've been talking about getting a setup for over a year. This quarantine finally did it in. We have one set up running already and I want to have another one going in the next couple weeks.

In a perfect world, I would spend around $500 and have what I need. The requirements are relatively low as far as computer specs go. This computer will be just for the sim and internet browsing. These are the requirements to run the sim
quote:

Windows 8.1 64-Bit, Windows 10 64-Bit
64-bit Windows
4 core CPU or better – Some examples (but not limited to): AMD FX-6300, Intel Core i5-4430, Intel Core i5-2320, AMD Ryzen 3 1200
8 GB of RAM
A gaming graphics card with at least 2GB of DEDICATED memory – Some examples (but not limited to): Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 @ 2 GB / GTX 1050 or ATI Radeon HD 7850 @ 2GB / AMD RX 550 or better
10 GB of free disk space (40 GB for all cars and tracks)
Microphone optional, required for voice chat

ETA: I'm not really looking to spend a fortune on a computer that I don't really need. Some of the systems I've seen are really nice and would outperform my expectations by a mile, but I don't think I could pull the trigger on something like that

Yeah, you don't need hardly anything honestly. Guess I need to look up that sim.

Is that iRacing like a virtual race car league? The graphics look pretty good and the anncoucers make it sound live. Pretty cool.

Are those the minimum or recommended specs?

If your budget allows I might bump up the RAM to 12 (you didn't list it so I am guessing you're going with 8) or bump the processor up to an i7. It's better to have a little too much computer for what you need than too little computer.

Recommended specs. RAM is 8. I was thinking about eventually bumping up the processor but I thought this build might be a good starting point

You're solid then.

If you want to bump up the processor then do it before you build (it's far easier and less costly since you aren't buying both processors). Upgrading the RAM will probably get you a little more noticeable performance but it's far easier to do and can be done at any time. Just make sure when you order that your choice in RAM leaves at least one open slot for adding RAM instead of replacing RAM.

This is the worst advice

Bump that video card up first if you're going to be spending any money upgrading, that's where you'll get the most significant improvement to framerates

Normally you would be right but the OP clearly stated the sole game he was wanting this for and the video card he has chosen is well above the recommended specs for it.

The game's recommended video spec is an integrated 2GB card that first hit the market almost a decade ago. The OP is already going with a new-model 4GB dedicated card that will give him all the smooth frames he needs even at the game's highest settings. Getting a better card at that point is for nothing more than bragging rights. Hell, you might as well be saying to not run EverQuest on anything less than a 2xxx series.

This is kind of what I'm going for.

Are you actually located in P'ville? I can find something much better than that for $450.

UGH, only dumb HP and Dell computers have ram in numbers not divisible by 8.
