From rumors (who knows how true they are) he's had offers to be the Alabama DC, Florida State DC, Texas A&M DC, Cal DC, and Colorado HC over the past 2 years. It wouldn't surprise me if Petersen told him that he was going to give this another couple of years and then hand the program over to him which caused Lake to stick around.

talk about HORRIBLE timing... for the 2021 class the #1, 7 and 8 overall players are from Washinton. top two were already committed to UW. bet they lose at least one of them now

Huard was the only one committed, and there's zero chance he's going anywhere else. JTT is a UW lean but I don't see that changing much with the entire defensive staff sticking around. Egbuka I would say is 50/50 for UW. Whatever Lake decides to do with the offensive staff will have the biggest influence on Egbuka.

I was just reading up on his move from Boise in 2013 and they said (then) his son that was previously ill had recovered and was about to start high school. I had no idea how old he was.

His son is 25 now.

Yes, I believe his sons illness isnt a guiding force of his career anymore but I may be wrong

He has two, his youngest Sam was starting high school around 2013 so I think you're referring to his older one.

It is from my understanding. Sam (the one who graduated HS a couple years ago) had cancer and had a brain tumor removed. From all accounts he's been in remission for several years now.
Petersen never struck me as one of those Gruden-esque coaches who can't function in life without being involved in football in some shape or form. And having a life event like your kid having cancer can truly change your perspective on things. He put his kid and family first for a long time staying at Boise State when he was sick and recovering. He's been coaching since he graduated college in the late 80s.
If I could see anyone being like "you know, I just want to enjoy life now", Petersen is one of those guys I could see doing that.

For some programs, losing two years in a row to Cal is frankly humiliating. (Cal is currently ranked #115 in scoring offense, #117 in total offense). Big donors probably started yelling at Petersen after losing the 2nd game of the season to Cal, and things just went downhill from there.

They also lost to fricking Colorado. Lost at home to Oregon and Utah. Was a bad season for UW, but he's done enough and they should be realistic enough given the 2000s to give him a mulligan

Ya'll who think this is a football move by the administration at UW are crazy. Petersen is one of the most well-respected coaches in the game, and UW knows how valuable he is, especially in the Pacific NW.
The very fact they had the DC's contract immediately ready on the same day as Petersen's announcement shows this succession has been in the works for at least a couple of months, if not much longer.
And this seems to be a win/win for all involved. UW gets to keep continuity with their recruiting and culture, while Petersen gets to stay involved with the program. At the same time, he can still enjoy dinners with his family in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
