really crazy how guys like Peterson and Kelly weren't able to recreate the success at their new places that they had at their former schools.

Petersen in 2016 - (12-2) w/ a loss in the Peach Bowl

2017 - (14-2) w/ a loss in the Fiesta Bowl

2018 - (10-4) w/ a loss in the Rose Bowl

Despite not winning one of the bowl games I think he did pretty well for himself in Washington.

Washington has good history, but remember they had a winless season only like a decade ago

People bring up all the outside reasons he might be stepping down but the biggest reason is they went 7-5. He’s not used to getting his arse beat

Maybe they aren’t mutually exclusive.

That is a shocker.

ETA: hope his kid is doing well and isn't the reason for stepping down.

That's not a fair assessment at all.

Source close to #Washington's Chris Petersen tells me he has no health issues or family issues that caused the decision. The season wore on him, and he needs a chance to step away. His new administrative role should focus on leadership development for coaches and others.

Just spoke to a someone close to Chris Petersen on him stepping down: “There’s no illness or ulterior motive to his retirement. He just needs to re-charge.”

Might have gotten caught with a coed.

It is not his kid's health. I have a friend on staff at Washington and said Peterson was supposed to be in home at a recruits and then they all heard the news break. Said its crazy out there right now and totally blindsided.

I find this extremely hard to believe considering they hired from within with Jimmy Lake. Considering his pedigree. This doesn't seem like a situation where folks should be "blindsided". The job is draining, and Petersen has never been an enthusiastic recruiter. It is not hard to imagine him getting burned out. I could also imagine him back at Boise in a couple years if Harsin ever moves on.

Also, Peterson is staying on at UWash in an admin role.

I would assume Lake and maybe a few others that would need to be involved knew but was definitely not known throughout the whole staff.

Interesting. People on their board have been pretty frustrated with Petersen and I think lot of them wanted to see him go. Be careful what you wish for...

Nobody wanted to see him go. They wanted to see him make changes on the offensive side of the ball.

The defense will have the exact same guys running things, and that's what made us successful over the past few years. Hopefully Lake makes changes on the offensive side of the ball.

Petersen's kid has been fine for years, from my understanding. I think Petersen just got burnt out. He absolutely hates the changes coming with college football and probably didn't want to deal with it (transfer portal and paying players).

UWash officials must be pretty high on Lake. Especially since they hired him as Peterson's successor over another coach that has been there longer. I know that Cal tried to pluck Lake away a few years back. But were unsuccessful.

Lake would owe $6 million buyout if he terminates deal without cause through Jan. 31, 2022. Amount then drops annually: $3M, $1.5M, $500K
