But why have you taught your daughter to bludgeon snakes with a bat?

There are two scenarios:

1. She's bludgeoning a harmless snake.
2. She's far too close to a venomous snake.

I haven’t. I guess it’s just a natural reaction when someone sees a 4ft long snake curled up on the patio by the door blocking access to the backyard. I thought she handled herself well under the circumstances. Until we have mice doing the same thing I can’t really argue her logic.

No, it's not a natural reaction for an 8 year old to kill a rat snake with a bat. But, that's not my point.

If YOU had to come here for an I.D., I'm assuming she didn't know what kind it was either. Do you really want her trying to kill a venomous snake? That's how most bites occur.

Get a reptile book. Study it with the entire family. Maybe go to the closest big zoo and look at the venomous snakes and learn what they look like. Then: QUIT KILLING HARMLESS SNAKES.

Might have been chasing the rat snakes that were after the rats.

I love snakes. Out here in the country I even release the little Agkistrodon contortrix and Agkistrodon piscivorous back into the adjoining woods.
