2011 F150 5.0 v8

So I changed my oil today (~7500 mile interval), and when I drained it there was only 1.5 quarts in it. It takes over 7 quarts on a fill. No warning lights or anything, other than I just threw a code for "cam shaft bank "B" timing over advanced".
120k miles on truck with absolutely no signs of leaking oil.
Is it time to clear the codes and trade this bad boy in?

That's rare for a 5.0 to burn that much oil. Have you seen any smoke at all? Did you not check it. It's not abnormal for an engine to burn 1 quart every 1-2000 miles. So change the oil again and see how it drives but the code says you were having a problem with the cam actuator. It is powered by hydraulic pressure so that may be a problem. When you change the oil look for signs of metal in the oil. It would look silvery and be settled on the bottom of the drain pan.
If you see that trade it but tell us where.
Edited to remove laughing.

Shouldn't a low oil pressure light still have come on?

That;s what I was thinking. Also wondering if the last place that changed oil didn't fill it up all the way. Check your oil!

Always possible.

Change your own and then you'll know it's done right.

Cam looks to be retarded from oil gunk buildup, thus oil being trapped on gunk and the retarded cam. You wouldn't see an oil pressure problem because of less area due to buildup.
Put a motor craft filter on it, put 5w-20 in it, substitute one quart of oil for lucas oil stabilizer, and get the code cleared. Change oil within 3500 miles next time and repeat these steps. After that it should be fine, if not, needs a chain job.

That's a bad idea. Even if it's the OEM spec oil, 5W-30 is the minimum that should be run in those engines. Synthetic 10W-30 is an even better choice. For those that would say that oil is too thick, Ford specs 5W-50 in the Mustang Coyotes.

Except for the part where he advised to dump a quart of utter crap thickener in it.

Mine used to do that. Then it would start shutting off when I put it in reverse when the oil pressure was low. Never a warning light. Just check it every 3k miles and add some

That's what I was thinking, but it never came on

I change my oil now..
Had a 94 z71 350. fricking shop didn't fill it up and when I changed it myself the next time seems like nothing came out and I had an oil light. It freaked me out. I climbed alllll over it looking for a leak as it wasn't burning anything.. I was in college and very nervous it was a major issue.
Decided to just change to watch it. Never did it again when I started changing it.
All I can figure is the insta oil place fricked me.
I've changed oil in everything I own ever since.

I’m pretty sure my 5.0 calls for either 0w-20 or 5w-20

Yeah, that's the OEM spec. Doesn't mean it's good to use either. Ford went to 5W20 long before they stated using cam phasers, in an older 2-valve engine it's ok because the stock oil pump can supply the volume to maintain good pressure even as the oil sheared down. In later engines, the cam phasers use oil pressure to move and tap off enough oil volume such that the pumps don't supply quite enough volume to keep good pressure as the oil shears down. 5W50 oil specd for the Mustangs maintains enough viscosity so it isn't as much an issue, though 20W50 is better in warmer seasons. 5W20 is CAFE oil in trucks, go to a 5W30 or 5W50 in the winter and 10W30 or 20W50 in the summer.

Mine does the same. 2011 F150 5.0 159k. Checked it the other day and it was 2 quarts low about 3,500 miles since oil change. I just keep some oil on hand and add until I have a full oil change done.
