I'm pretty sure Whole Foods does not get their seafood locally, their seafood prices are both super high (typical whole foods) and its rarely that great looking. I routinely go to one located on the gulf coast and the stuff that should be super fresh rarely looks good.

Point simply that I'll call around to local seafood shops. Some of them can even get it for you if they know they can sell it.

Shrimp basket still open in Baton Rouge? I would assume it’s a Red Lobster crowd or just wanna be Salt Lifers.

I go here all the time. Not for the fish though. Their seafood is fricking disgusting. I swear the same hunk of tuna has sat there for the better part of a year.

Well a good bit of what Whole Foods sources isn’t caught local. But they have a good buying program and if you find out when the one you use takes their delivery you can get it as fresh as anyplace and fresher than most. This depends on what you’re buying of course. Baton Rouge takes delivery on Thursday and I’ve ordered from them, fresh sardines and wild caught salmon both which are flown in as is most of their fish.

Order some sardines, drizzle olive oil and sea salt and roast over a grill. Good stuff with a nice bitter salad and some good wine.

Gulf fish I buy locally.
