Go back and watch an episode like "You Win Or You Die" and compare it to what the show is now and tell me I'm wrong.
actually did this exact thing the other week and compared to the spoils of war and the differences are incredible

Those two episodes are nothing alike and were never designed to be. The case would be stronger if you compared newer season openers or battle episodes with their earlier counterparts.

The draw of GoT was its ability to subvert expectations and the subtlety/complexity of its characters. All that shyte went out the window as the masses began watching and D&D fully gained control. Now it's just drivel for all of you to watch so you don't feel left out on social media.
Masses were watching in season 4. And season 6 (not book material) was way better than season 5 (based on book material).

Season 4 was almost entirely based on book material, and it was awesome. SoS is my favorite book and season 4 reflects it wonderfully.
Why is Season 6 so much better than 5 to you? Because bad stuff happens in season 5? Weird how it wasn't until everyone started tuning in in season 5 and complaining about bd stuff happening that D&D decided to let up on the darkness. Btw - Season 6 does have elements taken from the book, although it is by and large not adapted material.

Agreed.

Not sure if serious.

Do you think that is never going to happen in the books (if they are released)?

I hate to break it to you, but so does 7 and so will 8. Probably more 8 than in 7.

the big jump in viewership was from season 3 to season 4, and again from season 6 to season 7

i guess you can find conspiracy in anything, but the complaints about darkness/brutality/violence/etc in GoT as aired have been fairly discussed in light of the actual subject matter. it IS dark, violent & brutal

Do you not remember the blowback on Sansa's rape? The outrage over that was incredible to me. Do you think most of the people that were outraged know much about the world of Ice and Fire or the books that the show runners were adapting?

i will agree with you on that.
kind of a no-win situation with the writers...her marriage to anyone not named tyrion would necessarily bring an unpleasant result for sansa
