Sure they can.
If everyone dies, that effectively ends the plot threads.

I have a feeling they’ll be rushed and several will leave us pissed off.

frick’em ... frick all the bastards.
Let’s just get it over with and move on. I’m tired of them toying with my feelings. They are now officially nothing to me. They’re all dead to me.

Once D&D completely took over from GRRM, the writing noticeably went way downhill - except for major moments like Cersei blowing up the Sept of Baelor and "HOLD THE DOOR" - which were very obviously straight from GRRM's brain/part of his plans for the books.
By limiting themselves to 8 [7.5] seasons, while attempting to "adapt" source material that doesn't even really exist, D&D forced themselves into making HUGE events and drastic character decisions/dumb deaths the norm. You can't get to the end in the next 6 episodes without events being sped up x1000.
The draw of GoT was its ability to subvert expectations and the subtlety/complexity of its characters. All that shyte went out the window as the masses began watching and D&D fully gained control. Now it's just drivel for all of you to watch so you don't feel left out on social media.

I don’t agree with everything he said but the show does seem at times to care more about making things cool (like the whole going beyond wall mission) then the quality of the storylines. But the writing quality also has to do with HBO shortening the seasons so the writers are forced to cram a lot of things one after the another.

if anything, they included too much in the early seasons and took too long to get where we are now. danaerys was in essos for 6 seasons...why?
was anybody clamoring for MORE MEEREEN?
this idea that there is so much more of the story that we are going to miss or speed through is crazy to me. its not their fault GRRM didnt finish the books. they've got a show to write, film and air. how exactly were they supposed to continue to stall and wait for him?
and yes, the great wight hunt was patently dumb. but if it was in the books, would we still call it dumb?
if the books had been finished, maybe they could have story-boarded the show more evenly. but they werent, so they did what they could

Looks like episode 3 is actually 82 minutes, not 60.

I think the show skipped and rushed when they didn't need to. All of this was to sprint to a spot where they cut off stories that could have been prolonged.
I think when the show got ahead of the books, Martin gave up on trying to finish the books. He might have said frick it either way but they easily had another season on stuff they could have done before catching up.

From Watchers on the Wall:
Updated Season 8 run times

At 82 minutes, season eight’s third entry, which will be all about the Battle of Winterfell teased in the trailer, is the longest Game of Thronesepisode ever. As of right now, the longest aired episode is the season seven finale, The Dragon and the Wolf, with a running time of 80 minutes to be matched by the fifth and sixth episodes of season eight.

This thread is 5 days old and still says "Runtine" and it's bugging the shite out of me.

I would rather they stick to the spirit of the Song of Ice and Fire story that they established in season 1-5.
Like I said - around season 5, the masses tuned in, made their qualms and nitpicks known on social media, and seasons 6 (and especially) 7 suffered because of it.
Is this thread not the proper forum to air my grievances? Hell, I warned you all that season 7 would be a downturn before it aired, and I got downvoted into oblivion. Too many people care now. It's been dummed down to appeal to "the average viewer." Go back and watch an episode like "You Win Or You Die" and compare it to what the show is now and tell me I'm wrong.

Outside of Dorne, I’m not sure outside influences have had anything to do with the plot decisions they’ve made.
