I never taken any of mine out to eat either. Some of the wild ones were mean af anyway (white lip and amathistine Pythons I’m looking at you) so trying to do anything would result in striking fury.
Like stated tho if the snake is finally taking it out will not work
And speaking of finicky. I had some hatchling grey banded King snakes that would not eat at first and I had to force feed them lizzard tali’s and other parts. Then they would eat the tail on there own if it was fresh broke and moving. Then they would finally go after pinkies after I’d wipe some lizard blood on them. Then finally onto normal ravenous eating. Pita but they were fine looking!

I used this method last night and you were right. The hook totally changed it's behavior from posted up ready to strike to an "ah shite, he's picking me up".

I had a ball python when I was a kid. Cool arse snake. But me once cause I was being a dumbass and let him smell his mouse happy meal before I gave it to him.
He got out twice. The first time he climbed up my chest of drawers and wrapped around the turn table on my stereo. The second time he worked his way into our old pedal organ.
Only problem I had was sometimes he sucked at getting the skin off his eyes.

I was playing with the idea of getting one, the wife caught me watching some youtube vids and said "If you ever want a divorce, thats the way to go."

I owned three ball pythons over ten years. I always fed them in their tank without issue. And I always used live mice or rats.

I took my son to the Slidell herp show in January and. My wife said when we got home “I’m shocked you didn’t come home with one”

just my 2 cents but i had a cheap plastic tub I fed my Boa in. put the snake in there first and let him get calmed.... then the mouse. I read pro and con on live mice..... I always fed mine live just because I thought it was important as far as natural instincts and all but I guess I could see both sides of the argument.
I usually left him in the feeding tub for an hour or two after the ate so he wouldn't get nervous and regurgitate.
Never had an issue and would still have him if I hadn't had to move. I had someone that wanted to buy him and it was easier than trying to move a snake given my dad didn't want him in his house and I was going to have to stay there a couple of weeks until my new place was ready.
Probably worked out well bc my wife would never go near one.
