Had LSU played a 4-7 alabama team and won 9-6 it would have been "escaping" with a victory. But this was the "game of the century". 1 vs 2. Alabama had the home field advantage and the f-in lost.
I totally agree. The media got caught up in the narrative that Bama lost it with missed FGs and the jump ball awarded (correctly) to Reid at the goal line. Rather than we won it.
They forgot that if JJ doesn't throw slightly behind Shepard on a completion in the redzone, he likely walks in for a TD before halftime. Also, Ford barely stepping out of bounds on the TD run in OT.
I remember Kornheiser saying on PTI that if Ford scores, the perception of a great defensive game is completely different because LSU proved they could reach the endzone and Bama couldn't.

His biggest regret in a coaching career that spans nearly four decades remains his team’s preparation leading up to the rematch. He wishes he had better motivated his players to play a team that they’d already beat. “The head coach, me, did a poor job,” he says.

I don't really see it ever being as exciting for me again, as the regular season does not mean much any longer since a committee can just vote you in if you have injuries or just pass the "eye test:".
I still don't understand how Ohio St got in over Penn St.
Penn St and USC were playing some of the best football in the country after their early season losses (both coming on 9 and 8 game streaks, respectively) . I still think the two best teams played for it all, but Penn St and USC would have given Clemson and Bama better games than Washington and tOSU did.

I think the fact that Bama lost AT HOME and was granted another shot then ended up winning is what killed it. I don't think the game happening itself killed it.

So you are saying that Okie State was a better team than Bama that year??????
Because IF you are... YOU are A dummy.............
Perhaps. Perhaps not. We will never really know, will we?
I maintain that if it had been Oklahoma instead of Oklahoma State with the exact same resume that year, we would have played the Sooners in the BCSCG.
And, that is the problem.

Did the LSU-Alabama Rematch Really Kill the BCS?Sports Illustrated article from yesterday - LINK TLDR: College football is still using the BCS if LSU plays Oklahoma State instead of the rematch with Alabama. I hate the BCS, but would prefer it to have won that national championship (or at least had the chance against OKST)

No, it was the bitching from Presidents and non SEC news media that could handle the possibility of having two SEC teams again in the final.
Had to disguise such in some way.
That's why the input was passed on to a "committee" ...
just in case the computer formula would do it again.
And with 4 teams, it almost happened again, now, they will push for 6 or 8 to try to lengthen the odds.

Still wish they would have kept the BCS formula and then just made it a 4 team playoff. I hate the selection process - maybe use 1/2 computer algorithms and the other half of the points weighted to the selection committee.

Absolutely, but the formula could not be influenced.
Only other thing, I would strive to add meaning to be #1 and # 2 and based ON THE BCS formula and have a 6 team playoff with #1 and # 2 having a bye.
Right now #1 and # 2 do not enjoy any rewards.

if the selection committee existed back in 2011, Bama is still getting the nod. because
they were undoubtedly one of the best 4 teams in the country.
thats what I think you meant to say.

Personally I like the days of UPI and AP polls choosing the NC and there being so many bowls, particularly the shite bowls with the shut teams. Looks like that everybody getting a trophy mentality.

It’s always about $$$$ and brand name. A natty with Oklahoma State Vs LSU isn’t as flashy as The University of Alabama Vs Louisiana State University. Same as 2015 with The Ohio State University Vs The University of Alabama. DOLLA DOLLA BILL YALL

We as LSU fans should be grateful we are one of those 15 programs that can get by on name alone and squeak into a game we don’t necessarily deserve to be in..
LSU
Bama
Ohio State
USC
UGA
Oklahoma
Notre Dame
Michigan
...
List goes on

People wanted a playoff for years, it was going to happen within the next few years. The ncaa ofcourse fricked up the playoff process.

It may have been the death knell of the BCS, but it had been dying for quite some time. LSU 03 winning while USC gets the Assoc. Press title. LSU backing into the Natty with 2 losses because of some quirky conference championship games. LSU v. Gumps rematch. Odd how all of these strange BCS controversies involve LSU. Oh, and undefeated Auburn being left out in the cold in 04.
Only a true playoff system would change this.

Game of the Century Part II definitely didn't kill the BCS but it was the final nail in the coffin. The controversy and groaning about the BCS started around 2003 when LSU won the crystal football and USC claimed a share of the national championship from the AP.
I think (from what I remember) that was the start of the BCS groaning. Then an undefeated Auburn got left out, I believe it was the very next year. That started a conversation for a playoff and then it took off more heavily later.

I truly believe if Okie State would have been in there instead of Bama, LSU would have gone down as one of the best teams ever. They beat 8 ranked teams during that season, so when they played the team, they were ranked. If they would have beat Okie State, that would have been 9. (Oregon was 3, Miss St was 25, West Virginia was 16, Florida was 17, Auburn was 19, Alabama was 2, Arkansas was 3 and Georgia number 12.) I am in my mid 40's, so I always considered the mid 90's Nebraska teams as the most dominant, but I think LSU would be up there with them. After that game, I just lost interest in LSU football. That game just changed me. I took football way too seriously. Now it is just another thing to watch on tv. I just can't get worked up about it. Too many more important things in life.
