I have someone who said they’d be willing to give me a 600 gallon aquarium for free, I just need a filter. A google search didnt come up with anything so does anyone know what kind of filter I could get for it. Looking to have a freshwater native fish tank.

Of course when it comes to aquariums there are seldom any answers that don’t start with “well, it depends..”
It’s not necessarily the tank size but the quantity and type of fish you have in it.
At the end of the day, the simple answer is you’re going to start with an external canister filter for a tank that size and go from there.

Probably more than one.
Look at a Fluval FX6 to start.
ETA: ideally you’d want a sump system for a tank that big. But a couple of large canisters will do the job also.

The tank will be the cheapest component.

Do a sump setup for a tank that size

I pretty much want to do the native fish in south Louisiana (all the variations of bluegill, largemouth, catfish, gar, and sac-au-lait)

600 gallon
Unless you have taken care of fish before, I would suggest passing on this deal.
600 gallons is incredibly big. Youre dealing with over 5000 lbs of water weight with that aquarium. Depending on your living situation, you might not be able to house that kind of weight. A cheaply made apartment floor wont support the weight.

I wouldnt do a large variation of fish.
Plenty of local species are mean as hell. Perch will put a hurting on other fish in an aquarium. They are bullies even with other perch
Largemouth bass can and will eat all fish smaller than them.
Catfish can be mean as hell also.
About the only docile fish is the gar, and they can get incredibly big, or at least too big for aquariums.

I have a 375 gallon with 3 fx5s (older moodel fx6) Probably would work on a 600 gallon. Get the measurements of the tank...might not be 600.

I used to have large aquariums. I often thought that a pet store could give the aquariums away because the real money is in everything else. You are correct.
