it’s amazing to me how many top level players come from the former Yugoslavia.

It seems like there were at least ten guys who were significant contributors in the four games today from those six countries. That’s not even mentioning the young studs like Doncic coming up the ranks.

A few questions:

How did this come to be? Is this the Vlade/Drazen effect a generation later? Why is basketball such a big deal there?

Could a unified Former Yugoslavia team give an American team a real run for its money on the world stage? If not, what about a unified European team?

Lots of tall guys in their population
Great development programs starting very young
Highly value shooting skills
Tons of western influences in their coaching

They have incredible player development + the influences you mentioned

If the top American talent is playing no

If not, what about a unified European team?

Maybe. If you did “World” where guys like Simmons and Embiid are included it’s definitely possible but I’m not sure the perimeter talent is all there

unified Yugo won a gold at Olympics when Carter played politics with our Olympics.

they might. they would have a decent front line but not enough speed in backcourt.

If they hit their 3's they could upset LeBron, D Green, Klay, KD and Curry. You think?

It's a sports crazy region from what I hear. I'm sure that Vlade/Drazen generation did have a big influence. I don't know if they'd be better than Spain was a few years ago but they'd have the deepest roster of NBA talent a foreign team has ever had

Dragic, Doncic, Bogdan, Saric, Jokic. Milos, Bojan, Mirotic, Nurkic, I'm sure I'm forgetting a few as well.

I guess my question is more historical. Why was this region even able to produce such a good crop in the first place after the Wall fell and why, now even twenty-plus years later, a region that has a combined population less than the state of New York would be able to field an international team that is easily the second-best in the world and that could perhaps even challenge us?

Think about that: the former Yugoslavia combined has a population about a third of what modern Spain is.

The "sports crazy" thing I am sure applies to an extent, but why wouldn't that apply to Germany, France, Britain, Russia, etc., all of which have populations multiples larger than this region?

It's such a statistical anomaly and stands out so much to me that I have to think there is something that data or training or genetics or whatever can't catch going on there. For that matter, it's a bit of a mystery to me why basketball in the Mediterranean in general (Spain, Italy, Greece, the Balkans, Turkey) is so, so, so much better in general than the rest of Europe. It's not like American cultural influence there was any stronger than the rest of Europe.

The Mediterranean countries fricking love basketball

And since most the soccer clubs have basketball teams the fans support it like soccer

Serbians and Croats are nuts for it

Then off course you got the Greeks and Turks as well

I guess that's kind of at the core of my question: why is that so? What makes these places so much better at producing basketball players than, say, Germany, France, Holland, Scandinavia, and so forth? The genetics aren't any different at all (as far as producing tall dudes), the populations are much larger, they're much more economically developed, they all are great sporting countries, etc., etc.

So what gives? Why is that little slice of the world so great at producing elite hoopers?

i think it comes down to the fact that they're tall and athletic. most other regions only have one of the two going for them.
