THROWBACK THURSDAY: A question about 1994 LSU Football: Did Curley Tank LSU After Auburn?

...a bulb just now flipped on in my head. I know everyone is obsessed with March Madness and Tiger baseball, and if football is mentioned at all, it's to denigrate Coach Oeaux. I get that, but--
It just occurred to me that Curley Hallman may have tanked the Tigers after the humiliating maltdown at Auburn. Nothing else can explain how the Tigers looked so good their first two weeks (a 18-13 loss to undefeated Texas A&M and a blowout of a good Miss State team) and so bad in the weeks following the Auburn debacle, up until the firing after losing to Southern Miss!
What thinketh ye, on the Rant?

Meh, I don't think this is a topic worthy of investigation. He's should probably just pack it in.

Yeah, he wanted the first pick in 1995 college football draft.

I was really big into LSU football in the 90s. I like posts dedicated to any season during that decade.
Are you saying that you believe Curley purposely caused LSU to have a 4-7 record after showing in its first three games that it could compete with two of the best teams in the country? Why would he, or anybody, do that?
What would Curley gain from that? Why wouldn't Curley want a program that he is head coach of to have an 8-3 or 9-2 record?
Curley was coming off a 1993 season in which he put up a 5-6 record, and was one game away from a bowl game at 5-5, but laid an egg against Arkansas at home the day after Thanksgiving on a 3pm ESPN kickoff. The 1993 season had several bright spots, including a three-game win streak over Ole Miss, at Alabama, and Tulane, to set up the aforementioned season finale against Arkansas.
LSU returned several starters and looked like a team that could make a bowl game, maybe even compete for an SEC West title as a dark horse. 1994 was Curley's year to "put up or shut up," according to WFMF's Jim Nasium (probably not his real name). This was his "hot seat" year, he knew if he failed, he was gone. He failed. Joe Dean fired him. Gerry DiNardo was named head coach for the 1995 season.

Now your OP at least contains an actual question, albeit an incredibly dumb one.

LSU took Kevin Faulk with the first pick in the draft, and also picked up Allen Faneca and Booger McFarland later in the late first and early second round.
Advantage Curley?

Good write up, and pretty much along the lines of what I was thinking.
Put more succinctly: why in the world would he tank his hot seat year?

I'm wondering what a maltdown is. Are you saying they were soft as ice cream?

He's been reading the ULL boards, like the rest of us give him a break

I noticed that the OP speaks glowingly of a close loss to "undefeated" Texas A&M. It was the season opener, so both teams were "undefeated".

No way Curley tanked. I remember being mad at the OC at the time, but that was hindsight. There was enough talent to make bowl games in 94 and 95 but things we awry.

I want more Curley Hallman stories. Give me more Curley Hallman stories. Surely there are folks out there sitting on some gems. Was living out of state during the Hallman era. Missed out on stuff.
My favorite quote on Curley, supplied by Auburn Coach Pat Dye when he said, "There's your boy".

I think the team lost confidence following the Auburn debacle.

I was at the next game after the interception game, it was against South Carolina. Curley said that we were "gonna keep that leather thing on the ground."
USC came in to Tiger Stadium in the rain with Steve Taneyhill and beat LSU for the only time in the series besides the first game in 1930. I think LSU attempted less than 10 passes. I swore I wouldn't go to another game with Curley on the sideline.
