Looking to get a basic GPS/Fishfinder. I'd like to be able to load maps/waypoints onto it but my most critical need is just getting me back to the launch. I have a 17' Alweld and would like do a through hull mount for the transducer. Later on down the line I'd luke to get a trolling motor that links with the GPS. Budget is $500, could maybe do a little more.

Straight line GPS is useless on the water so you will need mapping of some form.

Lowrance Hook2

I just got my Hook2 4x today. It’s going on the Compass tomorrow. I’ll report back after this weekend on how it performs

Lowrance elte ti 5 or 7" or compairable simrad.
Hook units are a terrible choice if mapping is what you want.

I like to be able to buy a sim card with preloaded charts and pop it in there.

Lowrance and simrad are the most user friendly when it comes to that. My lowrance looks like Google Earth.
Hook units have a slow processor and are geared towards sonar functions.

Yeah, the original Hook was slow and bad with mapping. The interface for the Hook2 is much simpler, the screen image is clearer, and the processor is lightning fast compared to the original Hook models.

He did say “basic” and the Hook2 is pretty good bang for your buck if you’re looking for basic.

Not saying it’s the best option, but it’s a decent unit at a low price point.

Seapickle—what’s the word on your map cards and the hook2? Will the cards for the hook1 work in the hook 2?

Everyone is overlooking this. Humminbird links with Minn Kota, Lowrance with Motorguide.

I was looking at the Hummingbird Helix 7. Seems to meet my needs.

I have a Helix 9 and I have been very happy with it. You will probably eventually want to add a mapping card because the base maps aren't very good.

I do not think the Hook series can connect to the XI5. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Straight line GPS

So my understand is that if a unit is plotter only, it's just a white screen showing waypoints? It won't show a map of any kind?

To put it simple, GPS is a positioning system. It gives you numerical coordinates that you can plot on a paper chart/map.

A chartplotter incorporates GPS with an electronic map.

I am in the same boat. Need to pull the trigger on one this week. SeaPickle, what mapping are you using? I will need to purchase a map system as well.

Damn, was about to pull the trigger on a HOOK7. All in need it for is maps (with a locally sourced chip ; ) ), will be on my gatortail so won’t even have a transducer.

I don’t want to spend $700 for an HDS and I’m not tied to Lowrance but prefer it.

What should I get?
