Friend has a painting and flooring supply shop. Quoted me nearly $4.00 per square foot on some that had a corked backing.

Showed several samples. Ranged from $3.50 to 4. New to this so I don't know what is cheap, what is actually good, and what is a ripoff.

I'm familiar with so-called kinfolk deals.

There’s a big price and quality variance between mass produced, engineered vinyl, and old growth vinyl from the Brazilian rainforest.

Was it Coretec flooring? That is a good price and it is sturdy stuff.

We are putting coretec plus 7 inch planks In our new house. It’s $4 a sq ft. I’d love to put real wood or a nice engineered product, but we have kids and dogs so having a waterproof floor that can take the abuse is a plus.

I put coretec plus 7 inch planks in our house last April. I got it for $2.89 a sq ft via an online retailer, and that included delivery. I did go to a few local flooring stores and the cheapest they quoted me for the same floor was $4.29 a sq ft if I remember correctly. So the online retailer for me was a no-brainer. It was pretty easy to install myself, and I'm very happy with how the floors turned out.

To the OP, one thing to look for in vinyl planks is the wear layer. If you get stuff from big box stores, the wear layer can be very thin (as in 6 mils). Coretec Plus is 20 mils, and others such as Flooret Modin can be as much as 40 mils.
