Have you ever been invited to a beta test?

I mean an actual beta test and not the glorified stress test/demos games have today. Games used to have these and I assume still do for a limited number of people (possibly friends and family of the devs).

When EverQuest Online Adventures Frontiers was about to come out, I got invited to the beta. They sent me a beta test disk for my PS2. We weren't on the live EQOA servers, but I had access to the "full" game for a number of months before the beta ended and the game itself released.

These days betas are only limited to a small helping of game modes/maps that do not represent the full product, but in those days, you were given everything the devs had finished up to that point to test for bugs and glitches.

Sure.

I got into SWG Beta very early when TONS of shite was broken and even though I knew it was "just beta" it left a bad taste in my mouth.

I was literally in the first group of players outside of SOE to play Planetside and OMG it was glorious. They REALLY listened to our groups feedback to.

Warhammer Online had so much potential, and they blew it.

Dark Age of Camelot immediately comes to mind as well.

I was part of the FFXIV beta before the ARR relaunch, but I think all legacy members were invited. Got to give feedback and everything.

Not sure if this counts in your book.

The only one I got was South Park: Stick of Truth. My buddy couldn't get me the hookup for FBW unfortunately, although I'm a little glad I didn't otherwise I'd be going crazy right now

I was a randomly selected Diablo II: Lord of Destruction beta tester, they sent me a disc and everything. I still have it, hopefully it may become a minor collector's item of some sort in the future.

These days, beta tests are really just glorified server stress tests.

Were those only on weekends? I can't remember.

I got invited to the SW:TOR closed beta (NDA and everything), but those were only like every other weekend. You did get grandfathered into all subsequent tests.

Back in high school I signed up for and was selected to beta test Ultima Online. The only reason I signed up was because a good friend of mine was super pumped about the game and was always talking about Ultima being one of his favorite game series ever. I've never played any of them to this day. He, however, did not get picked for the beta test. I ended up giving him the key Origin sent me.

(Part of me did it to be nice and the other part did it because my Internet connection at the time was garbage and my friend's dad had just gotten them hooked up with cable internet. I knew I wouldn't be able to enjoy the game anyway.)

I beta'd Pokémon GO because of my Ingress play.

I do occasional stress test/beta for money thing. Can't talk about what I have played for them.

Sounds right. And I think Lancer, Archer, and White Mage were the only available classes and Gridania was the only area. But THAT in itself spoke volumes because 1.0 Gridania was a nightmare of narrow paths and boring scenery. They really opened it up for ARR, and I personally felt really good about the game going forward.

Way back in the day, EQ2. Beta tested that.

I don't think legit beta testing exists anymore, even by users. Everything is "buy it in Alpha" - and then it never leaves Alpha ;p

I got into one of the later beta stages of World of Warcraft. It's the reason I stuck with a Paladin in vanilla even though they totally changed from when I played the beta to a few months after launch when I bought the game.

I also beta tested Warcarft III, but it might have been an open beta at the time. I can't remember.

I lucked into the closed beta of Killzone 2. Think there was less than 3,000 invites sent out. Was quite a lot of fun.

Blizzard did or still does beta tests for their WoW expansions. I lucked into a MOP closed beta invite that ran for months. I won my key via a giveaway though and not by filling out an application like you used to have to do.
