Getting a food saver now that i have a freezer in my garage. Need recs on a good model ... best bang for the buck, what bags work with what machines, what's the best overall deal/setup?

My main use will be breaking down bulk proteins into meal sized portions for our family, occasionally a small roast (nothing bigger than a chuck) and freezing meal sized portions of already cooked meals. I won't be needing to freeze game or anything from a hunt, as i don't hunt. (not against hunting, i just don't come from a hunting family ... keep ya shirt on) ... occasionally i'll be freezing some fish i caught, but that's it.

What do ya'll have? ... your experiences? ...Pros and cons? ... Recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I don't have a specific model, I got whatever was on sale at Costco a few years ago.

I recommend spending more for an automatic sealer than a manual. Mine is automatic, my dad's is manual, and we both prefer the automatic. Often I have to hold the bag with two hands and it's a PIA to have to do that press the button/bar on manual.

I use rolls so that I can always have the perfect size for what I'm doing.

Put three items in your amazon cart...a box of 3 8", a box of 3 11", and a box of 2 11" and 3 8". The prices fluctuate wildly. For instance, right now you can purchase a 3 pack of 11" rolls for $33.10, or the five pack (3 11" and 2 8") for $33.51. Obviously right now you would go with the five pack for $.41 more. I've seen the 8" rolls as low as $22.

The 3460 for $65.00 looks to be a steal.

Recently I bought zip lock brand of vacuum bags with a moisture barrier built in at Wal mart. I like them a lot.

Do you use them with the food saver mentioned?

Or do they require special bags?

Rodnreel ... do they only work with the ziplock machine, are they universal, what's the deal with these?
