Go to the farmer's market at the Ferry Terminal on Saturday and eat there. Go to Alcatraz, you'll need to buy your tickets in advance. It's worth visiting. Avoid Fisherman's Wharf, it's a tourist trap, the only reason to go there is there's an In 'N Out there. Walk through North Beach, and spend some time in neighborhoods, like the Marina or Cow Hollow. Go to Tartine bakery in the morning and have a morning bun and a cup of coffee.

Thanks, we are doing Alcatraz at night and I do want to try in and out. We will be staying in Union Square.

+1 to all that stuff, plus:
--climb up to Coit Tower, go to the top, & admire the view. Look for the wild parrots. Climb back down and walk Filbert St to the Liguria Bakery, an old school Italian place with great focaccia. Take your warm focaccia across the street to Washington Square park for a snack, or go around the corner to Tony's Pizza Napoletana for dinner and an awesome variety of pizza styles served under one roof.
--eat dim sum at a place with cart-style service. I like the City View restaurant on Commercial St; it has a Chinese clientele & lots of variety/turnover in the offerings. My favorite is the lotus-leaf wrapped packets of sticky rice cooked w/Chinese sausage, etc mixed in.
--plan a visit to the Asian Art Museum to coincide with one of the farmer's market/food truck pop ups in nearby Civic center/UN plaza.
--go to the still classic Zuni Cafe on Market St; eat the world's best roasted chicken and panzanella, enjoy a cocktail at the bar before dinner....try the Caesar salad...it's a cliche, but the Zuni version helped it to become a cliche.
--Humphrey Slocombe for ice cream
SF is a great town, now I'm gonna have to look up airfares.

Hike to explore the city on foot. There are some great hidden staircases all over the city and parks that offer fantastic views. Take n-Judah muni line (light rail) to golden gate park for the afternoon. In the park are the Japanese tea gardens, de young museum, and cal academy of science. Walk through the park to ocean beach and the cliff house. If you want to make for a really long hike, take the lands end trail from sutra baths, close to cliff house, to the gg bridge and then along the waterfront back to the ferry building ( about a 10 mile easy hike from ocean beach to ferry building). Lands end hike is gorgeous and offers great views of the Golden Gate Bridge from the cliffs as well as being an easy hike.

I assume you have your Alcatraz tickets already? If not they're likely already sold out.
All that other stuff sounds great. Keep your hand on your wallet in Haight Asbury...
and yes...ride the cable car.

Giants vs Twins MLB. That stadium is beautiful. I really enjoyed the games there of course that is if you like baseball.
