I can’t believe he’s not at the top of the leaderboard.

My only point is this dude is in dead last and I feel badly for the kid that didn’t get his one shot to play on tour.

Sponsor exemptions aren't strictly based on merit. But Block earned his spot IMO regardless.

I completely get inviting him. It’s a great story. Some young kid looking for a break got passed over for the spot.

How do you know this is the case? A lot of the exemptions are used on older guys or other guys who are in there just because of their name and have no shot at winning. This spot just happened to be the one spot where a kid was looking for his first break into the PGA? Highly doubt it.

Well so what? Is this hypothetical young kid more deserving? The young kid has time on his side.

Block's story was great. But didn't he make some comments this week about how great his game is and how if he had Rory's drive he'd be a top player?

LOL if so, cause the dude is +13 in the second round. Guess the golf gods are serving him a plate of humility.

Yes. He said his short game is "world class". I think he was 3/9 getting up and down yesterday.

Just remember this when people tell you a guy at their club or a buddy is almost good enough to play on tour cause they have a +2 Handicap. There is a giant gulf between Touring Pros and the best club pros. Eventually the regression to baseline happens.

He’s a +4.5 fwiw.

But also, he’s been interviewing like crazy this week and hasn’t practiced for the tourney the way he likely would ahead of time.

Think this was pretty expected this week. I’m interested to see how he plays at the Canadian Open in a couple weeks to see if he’s more recovered at all. Still don’t expect him to make the cut, but I don’t think it could possibly be this bad again.

I dunno, sounds like a typical non-pro golfer, overrating their game. I'd be pretty full of myself if I finished top 15 at a major championship.

That's golf though, even the best can look great on one course and below average on another.

Last week was the perfect storm. It was hard and no one was going deep. Sunday was the closest thing to scoring conditions and he shot 71 while 65s were flying all around him. This is not a knock against him, but he is not tour caliber material.

As Net used to say, "somebody has to stir the chili".

Here was his actual quote.

quote:

"Oh my God, what I would shoot from where Rory hits it would be stupid," Block said. "I think I'd be one of the best players in the world. Hands down. If I had that stupid length — all day. My iron game, wedge game around the green and my putting is world-class."

Ok but what are the courses like? I’m a 2 but if I had to play Ross Bridge from the back tees I would shoot 80. This course is playing firm and fast. Last week the conditions were soft. His ball speed off the tee is around 160. Tour average is 171. He had to hit a wood into a 470 yard par 4 yesterday he was 234 out. You can’t give up 50yd off the tee on tour. BTW John Rahm is a +9.5. That is an exponential difference.

Literally watched him skull frick at least 3 chips across the green and blow a bunch of pretty easy putts inside 10 feet.

Dude had the most "one of us" rounds I've ever seen.

I was about 50 feet away from the shot off the bridge, that was awesome.

He definitely started to enjoy the stardom a little bit too much. Dude needed to chill on the dick swagger while he was double bogeying par 5s.

When he really started to fall apart and the crowd remained pretty rowdy, you could tell Coody and Wu were getting super annoyed.

His shot on 16 was about 20 feet off the ground and skimmed off the water to keep him safe. He should have tripled that hole.

Wu also hit his 2 iron about 50 yards past Block's drive on 15.

74 was better.
Missed cut, but at least it was not 81 again.
