I'm getting ready to take a trip and want to get a phone to use there with a compatible SIM chip for the country. In addition, I generally don't carry insurance on my phone, so it would be good to have a backup phone as well.

Any recommendations on something $200 or less? I generally prefer android. I'd like something new but don't necessarily require it. Biggest priority is camera and picture quality as I'll only be taking photos and using a couple basic apps.

if you have enough time before your trip, hit swappa and grab a fairly recent pixel, oneplus or samsung model. there should be lots of options around $200.

i have a oneplus8t and its the shite and i think i only paid around $200 for it a year ago.

I did this a four years ago and got a pixel 2XL. I am only now considering purchasing a new phone. 4 yrs for $200 is a pretty good deal considering cell phone prices today.

In addition to the Pixels, I have had really good luck with Motorola.

Is swappa still the best site for this? Logged on there earlier today to check this out and it seemed kind of bloated. Probably just need to spend some more time with it.

Also for all of you who are going this cheap phone route, what wireless service are using? My current plan with ATT finishes up soon, and it seems to me the only advantage to the big carriers is getting one of the brand spanking new phones. Did this when I started with ATT 3 years ago and got a Note20 Ultra. I could take the Note or even a Pixel/One plus to Visible and save some cash

I picked up a Moto 5G Styus for $149. It is unlocked , but I have to use Google Fi service for 3 months, I believe.

I bought an open box excellent one plus 9 at best buy last month for $190 and it's a great phone and insane value.

i have no complaints with my oneplus. excellent video & photos and people assume its brand new until I pop it out of the case and you can see the ugly 'resell' stickers on the back of it I never bothered to remove.

i'm a fan and i had been using google phones until this since the nexus 4 came out.

I'd get ATT prepaid. Pay $300 for the whole year, 16 GB of data per month. The piggybacking providers get lowest priority when the network is congested.

Samsung A53 5g. It retailed for $400 when it came out last year but can now be found for around $200 new.

I bought an unlocked Samsung S10+ last year for exactly this purpose, from Swappa. A bit less than $200. Great phone, much better than my company provided S10.

Background. I switched from ATT to Consumer Cellular 2 years ago. Anyway, I wanted to port a landline to a cell number. I purchased a ZTE smartphone from Target for temp service for $60. Android touchscreen, etc. Not an top tier phone, but it works for what it is.
