Here is my question.. Friend of mine said she recently lost money in the market....

She bought at 30... it went to 40. She sold at 36. Did she make money, or lose money?

In her mind, her money never was at risk...it only goes up.

It is nice to say that your house is worth more money than it used to be, but you don't have that money until you sell your house... right?

So what is wrong with a bear market...

WUT

I'm honestly not sure how to respond to this post. I'll just give it a downvote and let someone else try.

People typically like it more when their assets go up in value which happens in a bull market.

People don’t typically like it when their assets go down in a bear market.

We good now?

To your point, most investors would be better off with statements once every 5 years.

She made money. Duh. What she lost was the potential to have made more money.

Tell her it’s impossible to sell at the top. You could always have sold higher and for that matter, bought lower. It’s a natural human emotion to say she lost money. That’s why you should try your best not to let emotions guide your investment decisions.

Tell her that it’s her money. She can do what she pleases.

I may not time the market perfectly but I’ll be close enough to sell high and buy lower most of the time.

Bear markets can be good for those looking to buy at a discount but there have been times where bear markets last longer than some can handle.

Those of nearing retirement age can be especially hit hard. The fear of a protracted bear market can be very unsettling

How lucky are we to have our own Peter Lynch in our presence.

Consider yourself graced.

Still losing money for your clients? Maybe you should spend less time on TD.

DEFINITIONS

Bull market - Occurs when the overall stock market is continually making all time highs with periodic corrections along the way (aka most of the last ten years).

Correction - Occurs when the overall market is at least 10% lower than all time highs.

Bear market - Begins when the overall stock market is at least 20% lower than all time highs. Could last years, might last just two weeks... We entered a bear market recently.

So, you tell me, what's wrong with a bear market?
