McKenzie’s is not real King Cake IMO. It’s nothing but a loaf of bread with sugar on top.

Everyone who says they like McKenzies the best always mentions growing up or their childhood so I am to only assume no one really likes them, it’s just a nostalgia thing.

It's a real king cake in the sense that that's what a king cake was when I was growing up. So, you're right. It's pretty much a nostalgia thing.

The McKenzie King Cakes of my youth in the 70's are far better than any of these over glorified Cinnamon Rolls of today mascarading as a King Cake.

And here I was thinking my wife was batshit crazy for spending $20 on a Randazzo's King Cake last weekend.

McKenzie's King Cakes were garbage.

McKenzie’s King Cakes of the 70’s and 80’s were the grossest thing on the planet.

I refused to eat these as a kid- they were that horrid. Tasted like dry bread with hard colored granulated sugar which literally fell off the slice when you took a bite. And they had cherries baked into the ring!!! They were disgusting. People ate them for ‘tradition’- not that they actually liked them. Sort of like fortune cookies.

It wasn’t until Randazzo’s came out in the early 80’s that I started to actually want king cake.

You’re not refined enough to enjoy a loaf of brioche with sugar on top. Stick to your cinnamon roll with icing and filling.

This. When I grew up that was pretty standard design for king cakes. The white icing king cakes weren't real popular back then.
