We are staying in the town (not the mountain village). Looking for rec’s for restaurants and bars. I haven’t been there since college, about 13 years ago, and don’t remember much of the specific places we ate and drank from that trip. The only spot I can recall is Last Dollar Saloon.

Also any recommendations getting from MTJ airport to town? Is there a specific shuttle operator we should use?

Just curious, how does everyone get there? Flying in to MTJ?

MTJ is the closest airport. Shuttles available to telluride and rentals available at mtj. Durango is an option, but 550 is much more likely to get shut down and I wouldn’t suggest it during the winter months. During the summer it is a beautiful drive though.

That’s right. United flies direct to MTJ from IAH (Houston). The airport in Telluride is private so no commercial airlines.

How much from MTJ to Telluride? Do you need to rent a vehicle? We just got back from Park City and I liked not having to drive.

Honestly, most of the non-resort restaurants are pretty darn solid. 221 South Oak, Tacos del Gnar, Siam (NOT Siam Tallay), The National, Brown Dog, La Marmotte, there - all are very good in their own way. In my view, with the exception of maybe Aspen, Telluride is the top food ski town.

Tacos del gnar in telluride closed this summer. You can hit the one in ridgeway on the way to telluride though. It is excellent.

Allred’s at top of gondola for that one special night. The Tai place in the village is excellent. Can’t recall name. It’s Siam. Enjoy great place to visit.

The few times I've had the opportunity to fly private into TEX we were rerouted to MTJ due to weather. Never had a problem flying out.

There are shuttles that run from both airports to Telluride and Mountain Village.

With that said, 221 is my favorite and the view at Allreds is awesome.

Are you renting a car or taking a shuttle? What's the cost?

Probably been to Telluride 15 times and have never rented a vehicle, just take a shuttle / limo service from Montrose to Telluride and once you get there just use the gondola or walk. Shuttle cost from Montrose to Telluride varies depending on vehicle and if you want private ride but I would account for about $75 per person each way.

That's what I liked about Park City. We didn't need to rent a car.

Thanks for the info MaxxPain2. There are 5 of us and I was starting to price the difference between a shuttle, private service, and a rental. It seemed to work out that a rental was about the same price as private ride (even when estimating gas)… so we may go that route to give us additional flexibility.

I’ve driven I70 and the highways nearby countless times. How is the road / route from MTJ into town?

Once you get out of Montrose its great and once you make that turn going into Ridgeway the scenery gets even better.
