He was at the tail end of a 6 year deal and probably in the $3M / yr range. Would ND have paid him $9.5M a year? Possibly not, but ~$8M was clearly doable.

ND doesn't have to disclose their salaries being a private school. I highly doubt they were paying him that low in reality. And I hate ND, but they absolutely could have matched LSU, they have a bunch of wealthy boosters that would have chipped in.

I just think Kelly wanted a change after being there over a decade, and wanted the challenge of competing in the SEC. It's like his final frontier, ultimate challenge to cap off his HC career which is 30 years running now. Win a title or two at LSU in the SEC and he cements himself among the greats in CFB history.

Dude could have coasted on easy street until retirement in South Bend. But it's probably been eating at him for a long time watching the SEC win championship after championship and thinking, I want some of that. Give me those resources and talent and I'll kick your arse.

Then Scott called.

I’ve seen reports that his ND salary was 6 - 7M

Oh sweet baby Jesus, yes please!!!
If he stays ten years and walks away with only 1 I'll still consider him a success. Think about it; how many schools can say that every coach since 2000 has/will win a national championship?

It’s been known that Kelly made 2.7 a year and is outside the top 50 coaches in coaching salaries.

Maybe it was top 30 but it was one or the other definitely
