It is not standard, and interesting indeed. Kelly basically saying if Woodward isn’t the AD, I want to be able to get out for free.

It’s not Woodward inserting himself into the contract (as surmised above), it’s Kelly asserting that he’s coming to work for/with Scott Woodward and if for some reason that changes I have the option to walk away without penalty.

Does this mean technically if Kelly were to retire in 5 years he would owe LSU $2 million?

That is also under the “without cause” terms.

I have thought more about it since i said it was job security for Woodward at LSU. What you said is also true, it gives BK some guarantee of who he is working for. But it also gives Woodward the ability to leave LSU and take BK with him at no cost. Wonder if the Mulkey or Johnson contracts had that.
