Most buyouts are to the university to which he is employed not the university he is hired to. In other words the university he was fired from would owe the buyout, not the university hiring him

So in this instance, no buyout is owed as he left on his own terms

That’s not how buyouts work when taking another job. There are buyouts for getting fired and buyouts for taking another job.

I’m assuming the downvotes is because you still don’t understand or your mad the LSU doesn’t owe anything?

He might have a buyout that he owes ND.

He has one with LSU if he leaves early.

Do you not think that if LSU owed anything Notre Dame would publish what they made from that?

The downvotes are because you are wrong. Very few coaches don’t have buyout clauses in their contracts if they leave.

Jimbo was the first I had heard of. Kelly may or may not have had one idk.

But for instance Riley, really USC because the new school generally picks up the bill, owes Oklahoma 7mil to buyout Riley’s contract.

A buyout and LDs are two different things

The buyout would be owed by Kelly not LSU. He may not have had a buy out but it’s not because he left on his own.

No, y’all couldn’t be more wrong. Liquidated damages and a buyout are completely different animals. LDs in BKs contract are what the coach would owe if he left while SW was AD. Buyout is what the university would owe if they fired him.

Buyout means you are buying the remaining years of a contract because you let someone go before that contract was up. LDs are the result of a failure to meet the contract terms.

The term “buyout” is used interchangeably for being fired and leaving. This is a message board not federal court. You are arguing semantics.

The OP is asking if Kelly owed anything to ND and the term buyout is routinely used to describe it. You are getting technical on terminology but that is not what he was asking.
